Box Score LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Senior Brittany Burgess (Utica, Ill./St. Bede) collected four hits and freshman Maria Schroeder (Lake Zurich, Ill./ Lake Zurich) was 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI's, but Weber State collected 17 hits and topped Bradley 11-5 Saturday afternoon at the Troy Cox Classic.
Weber State (3-1 overall) struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first and added another run in the top of the third as the Wildcats took an early 3-0 lead.
Burgess led off the bottom of the third with one of her four hits on the day and came around to score on a two-out double off the bat of Schroeder. Weber Stats answered with three runs in the top of the fourth, however, to build a 6-1 lead. Sara Hingsberger delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to center.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by Alyson Kulp to push the Weber State advantage to 8-1 before the Braves had a three-run inning of their own.
Junior Kathryn Spenn (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville) led off the bottom of the fifth with a double and Bradley loaded the bases with a pair of walks. Freshman Erika Hansen (Fillmore, Calif./Moorpark) drove in the first run of the frame with a single and senior Shannon King (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) followed with a double to drive in another run. Senior Lexi Cremeens (Dix, Ill./Mount Vernon) pulled Bradley within 8-4 with a RBI groundout to cap the scoring in the inning.
A pair of Bradley errors in the top of the sixth helped lead to a three-run inning for Weber State as the Wildcats went ahead 11-4.
Burgess and Schroeder combined for another run in the bottom half of the inning after Burgess led off the frame with a single. Schroeder drove her in with a two-out single up the middle to cut the Weber State lead to 11-5.
Both teams led off the seventh with a single, but were unable to push a run across and the Braves left a pair of runners on in the bottom of the seventh.
Senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for Bradley. Sophomore Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) dropped to 0-2 on the year with the loss.
Bradley continues play at the Troy Cox Classic later tonight with a 7 p.m. game against tournament-host New Mexico State.
