Box Score GULF SHORES, Ala. – Senior Shannon King (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) hit a three-run homer in the second to give Bradley a 3-0 lead and junior Kathryn Spenn (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville) added a grand slam in the top of the fifth to help power Bradley to a 12-1 victory over Belmont at the Sand Dollar Classic Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) earned her first victory of the year in the circle for the Braves, who scored a season-high 12 runs in the win.
Freshman Erika Hansen (Fillmore, Calif./Moorpark) led off the top of the second with her team-best sixth double of the season and senior Lexi Cremeens (Dix, Ill./Mount Vernon) followed with a single of her own. King gave Bradley a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer to center, belting her first home run of the season.
A three-run top of the third for the Braves gave Bradley a 6-0 Bradley advantage. Freshman Maria Schroeder (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) had a double to open the frame and Spenn had a single. Hansen drove in her team-best 12th run of the spring with a single to left. Spenn was able to come home on a wild pitch and junior Kendall Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) capped the scoring in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
Belmont was able to push a run across in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Bradley lead to 6-1, but a six-run frame for the Braves in the top of the fifth put the game out of reach. Bradley loaded the bases on an error and pair of single for sophomore Kelly Kapp (Freeburg, Ill./Gilbault Catholic), who drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Senior Brittany Burgess (Utica, Ill./St. Bede) walked to load the bases and Schroeder drove in a run with a single to right. Spenn belted her second career grand slam to push the Bradley advantage to 12-1.
Hull pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth as she limited Belmont to four hits in the complete game victory.
Five Bradley player had multi-hit games, including Spenn who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and four RBI. Kapp extended her career-best hit streak to nine games with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. King moved into seventh in career RBI at Bradley as she pushed her career total to 68.
Bradley plays Murray State at 4:30 p.m. at the Sand Dollar Classic later today.
