Box Score PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior Michelle Young (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) collected11 points, four rebounds, three assists and six steals in the final home game of her career, while freshman Tamya Sims (Milwaukee, Wis./Oak Creek) had 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the second half to help power the Bradley women's basketball team to a 60-50 victory against I-74 rival Illinois State Sunday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum.
With the win, Bradley completed the regular-season sweep of the Redbirds for the second straight year and the Braves won their fifth consecutive regular-season matchup with Illinois State.
Bradley made six consecutive shots during a 16-5 run early in the game, which gave the Braves a 19-7 less than eight minutes into the contest. After opening the game 7-for-11 from the field, Bradley made just three of 14 shots to close the half and Illinois State was able to eventually pull even at 27-27 at the halftime buzzer.
The offensive struggles carried over to the early parts of the second half as the Redbirds scored the first six points of the period to go in front 33-27. Illinois State led 42-36 with just under 12 minutes to play when Bradley used a 14-2 run to take control.
Freshman Shareece Burrell (Des Moines, Iowa/East) nailed a three-pointer to beat the shot clock to start the run. Sims took over during the nine-minute span in which Bradley held Illinois State to one field, tallying four points, five rebounds, three blocks and a steal to help the Braves take a 50-44 lead with 2:30 to play.
After Young split a pair of free throws, Sims had a steal in the backcourt and layup to tie the game at 42-42 nearing the 10-minute mark. Sophomore Whitney Tinjum (Stacy, Minn./Chisago Lakes/Washington) followed a Young steal with a layup and Sims had a put-back basket with 8:49 left to give Bradley a 46-42 edge.
A Katy Winge hoop with 6:43 to play ended a five-minute scoring drought for Illinois State and cut the Braves' lead to two 46-44. Freshman Danielle Brewer (Coatesville, Ind.) made a pair of free throws with 4:41 on the clock and Burrell capped the run with a jumper from the wing after a Sims offensive board to push Bradley's lead to six (50-44) with two and a half minutes left.
Winge made a pair of free throws with 2:11 to play, but a 6-0 Bradley spurt which included a Sims' layup and a pair of free throws gave the Braves their largest lead of the second half at 56-46 with 1:17 remaining.
Bradley held the Redbirds to one field goal down the stretch and just two field goals in the last 11:45 of play to hold on for the 60-50 victory.
Sims turned in her first career double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and one steal in 26 minutes of action. She helped the Braves limit Illinois State to 31 percent shooting. Young, who moved up two spots on Bradley's career scoring list into 14th, finished with 11 points and six steals in the final home game of her career. Her six steals pushed her team-best season total 54 as she became just the fourth player in program history to have 50 or more steals in three different seasons. Brewer added 10 points.
Winge led Illinois State with 17 points and four assists, while Lindsay Smith joined her in double figures with 12 points and three steals.
Bradley opens a two-game road swing to close the 2014-15 regular-season schedule Thursday with a 7 p.m. game at Drake.
