Box Score

GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Senior Alyson Spinas-Valainis (Davenport, Iowa/Assumption) scattered three hits in a complete game effort and freshman Erika Hansen (Fillmore, Calif./Moorpark) homered for the second time in as many games to help the Bradley softball team to a 2-1 victory over Belmont to conclude the Sand Dollar Classic Sunday afternoon.

Spinas-Valainis took a no-hit bid into the fourth inning before Belmont was able to scratch out a pair of hits.  She struck out four and walked one in the complete game victory.

Hansen gave Bradley a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second inning.  Junior Kathryn Spenn (Williamsville, Ill./Williamsville) led off the inning with a single to left and Hansen followed with her second homer of the day to give the Braves a 2-0 advantage and push her team-best RBI total to 16 on the year.

Bradley had five of its six hits in the contest during the second inning, but left the bases loaded in the frame.

Spinas-Valinais retired seven consecutive Belmont hitters heading into the fourth after giving up a two-out walk in the first and got a groundout to open the inning as the streak hit eight.  Kat Hollingsworth was the first Belmont player to reach second when she tripled to right to break up the no-hit bid.

Hollingsworth scored on a single by Jessica Wilson to cut the Bradley lead in half at 2-1.  The Braves turned a double play to get out of the inning without any further damage.

Spinas-Valainis sat the Bruins down in order in the fifth and worked around a one-out single in the single in the sixth.  She fielded the final two outs in a perfect top of the seventh to close out her team-best fourth complete game of the season as she improved to 2-5 on the year with the win.

Bradley returns to action Friday, opening the UCF Knights Invitational in Orlando, Fla. with a noon (CST) game against Kent State.
