Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley held Atlantic 10 Conference preseason favorite Saint Louis to a season-low point total, but a 12-0 Billiken run in the second quarter proved to the difference as the Braves fell 68-58 Sunday afternoon at Renaissance Coliseum.

Freshman Chelsea Brackmann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) was one of three Bradley (1-3 overall) players to score in double in double figures, collecting a season-high 11 points to go with five rebounds, two assists, three blocks and two steals in 21 minutes off the bench.  Junior Anneke Schlueter (Ulm, Germany/Max-Weber-Schule) scored a team-best 14 points, while freshman guard Ryan Wilkins (Kansas City, Mo./St. Teresa's Academy) added a season-best 11 points and three assists.

Bradley held Saint Louis (4-0 overall), which entered the contest averaging 86 points per game, to 33.3 percent shooting in the first quarter.  A Billiken three-pointer by Jenny Vliet gave Saint Louis an 8-7 lead with 6:07 to play in the period.  The Vliet three was the final hoop of the frame for the Billikens, however.  A Wilkins three-pointer with 3:55 on the clock was the only basket in the final six minutes of the opening stanza as the Braves led 10-8 after 10 minutes of play.

In the second quarter, sophomore Vanessa Markert (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) gave Bradley a 14-11 lead nearing the seven-minute mark with a basket and the advantage was 16-15 in favor of the Braves following a Schlueter layup closing in on six minutes left in the half, before Saint Louis went on a run.  Sadie Stipanovich scored eight points to highlight a 12-0 Billiken spurt and Saint Louis went on to take a 33-20 lead into the intermission.

Saint Louis extended the lead to as many as 20 points midway through the third quarter (45-25), but a three-point play by junior Danielle Brewer (Coatesville, Ind.) in the closing minute helped Bradley pull within 15 (53-38) heading to the fourth.

Brackmann found Wilkins cutting to the hoop for a layup to open the fourth quarter and a Schlueter three-pointer after a defensive stop quickly trimmed the Saint Louis lead to 10 at 53-43 less than a minute into the period.  The teams traded hoops for most of the fourth quarter as the Braves never cut the lead under 10 and the Billkens held on for the 68-58 victory.

Saint Louis shot 46 percent from the field in the game, but minus the 5-for-6 shooting stretch during the 12-0 second quarter run the Billikens were 18-for-54 (33.3 percent).

Bradley outrebounded Saint Louis 40-33, with senior Leti Lerma (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) tallying nine boards to go with two points, two assists, one block and one steal.  The Braves had 15 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second chance points.

Jackie Kemph played all 40 minutes and led the Billikens with 21 points and six assists.  Stipanovich scored eight of her 10 points during the second quarter run, while Olivia Jakubicek turned in a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three steals.

Bradley will have a week off from competition before continuing a season-long five-game home stand Sunday, Nov. 27 with a 5 p.m. game against Eureka at Renaissance Coliseum.
