AMES, Iowa – The Busch twins both broke the previous school record in the women's 5,000 meters, while sophomore Michael Ward and senior Chase Coffey both clocked the top times in Bradley history in the men's 3,000 meters to highlight the first day of competition at the Iowa State Classic for the Bradley men's and women's track & field teams Friday.
Seniors Kristen Busch and Caitlin Busch posted the top two 5,000 meter times in the Missouri Valley Conference this season with the pair both topping the previous school record of 16:35.05 set by Kristen at the 2014 MVC Indoor Championship.
Kristen was seventh overall at 16:11.29 in Friday night's race to edge out Caitlin, who was less than one second behind in eighth at 16:12.18 as the duo beat the previous conference best time of 2016 by over 45 seconds. Senior Sarah McMahon ran in an earlier heat of the 5,000 meters Friday afternoon and turned in a season-best effort of 17:15.29 to finish 38th overall.
Ward shaved almost five seconds off his own school record in the men's 3,000 meters, which was set last February. His time of 8:05.66 was good for 16th, while Coffey was just two one-hundredths of a second behind in 17th at 8:05.68 to improve his prior career-best time set earlier this season by 12 seconds. Sophomore Taylor Floyd Mews was also in the men's 3,000 meters and was 47th overall at 8:23.87.
In the men's 5,000 meters, junior Patrick Campbell was sixth in his heat with a career-best time of 14:22.32, which was 11 seconds off school-record pace and is now second in school history. Junior Caleb Beck took eighth in the same 5,000 meter heat and his career-fastest time of 14:23.13 is now third all-time on The Hilltop.
The Bradley men's and women's track & field teams close out competition at the Iowa State Classic Saturday starting at 10 a.m. in addition to having a contingent competing Saturday afternoon at Purdue's Fred Wilt Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
