Box Score SEATTLE, Wash. – Boise State jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, but Bradley chipped away at the Broncos' lead and used a four-run seventh to pull out a 7-6 comeback victory Saturday afternoon at Husky Classic.
Bradley surrendered four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second and a two-run homer in the bottom of the third gave Boise State a 6-0 lead over the Braves.
A two-out rally in the fourth finally got Bradley on the scoreboard. Sophomore Maria Schroeder (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) had a two-out double and she came around to score on a single off the bat of sophomore Taylor Willhalm (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) to cut the Boise State lead to 6-1.
Sophomore Taylor Morales (Spokane, Wash./University) and junior Kelly Kapp (Freeburg, Ill./Gibault Catholic) opened the Bradley half of the fifth with singles and the Braves had runners at second and third after a passed ball. Sophomore Erika Hansen (Fillmore, Calif./Moorpark) drove in Morales with a groundout and a RBI double by senior Alyson Clemente (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley) plated Kapp as Bradley pulled within three runs at 6-3.
Freshman Megan Mahaffy (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystale Lake Central) retired Boise State in order in the bottom of the fifth and worked around a two-out single in the sixth as the Braves went to the seventh still facing a three-run deficit.
Morales got things started for Bradley in the seventh with a leadoff walk and Kapp followed with her second hit of the game. Senior Kendall Duffy (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) loaded the bases with a single for Hansen, who drove in another run when she hit into a fielder's choice. Clemente walked to load the bases again and senior Rachel Huggins (Mt. Zion./Mt. Zion) tied the game at 6-6 with a two-run double down the left field line. Schroeder drove in the go-ahead run with a single to right center as the Braves grabbed a 7-6 lead.
Senior pitcher Jaelen Hull (Clifton, Ill./Bishop McNamara) took over in the circle for Mahaffy in the seventh and had to work out of a jam after hitting a batter and giving up a single to open the inning. Boise State had the tying run at third and winning run at second with two outs following a fly out and ground out. Hull struck out the next batter she faced, however, to close out the 7-6 Bradley win and earn her team-best third save of the year.
Hull's three saves are the most by a Bradley pitcher since 2006 and one short of matching Glena Nelson's 1988 school season mark of four. Mahaffy earned the victory for the Braves to improve to 3-0 on the year as she scattered eight hits, four strikeouts and two runs over 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.
The Braves continue play at the Husky Classic later tonight with at 7:30 p.m. (CST) game against Montana.
