MACOMB, Ill. – Sophomore Matthew Specht (Munster, Ind./Munster) fired a career-best two-under 70 and is tied for fourth after 36 holes at the 44th annual Beu/Mussatto Inviational, while the Bradley men's golf team is fourth in the team standings after Friday's action.
Almost one year to the day from shooting a career-best 72 in the opening round of the 2015 Hoosier Invitational, Specht carded a two-under 70 at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course in Friday's opening round. He followed it up with a 73 for the lowest 36-hole total of his career and is tied for fourth overall at 143, one shot behind the co-leaders.
Senior Lyle Burns (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour/Parkland) is five shots back of Specht in a tie for 12th at 148 after scores of 71 and 77 on the opening day to run his streak of consecutive sub-80 rounds to 10.
Freshman Drake Bushong (Pekin, Ill./Pekin) extended his streak of sub-80 rounds to 29 to tie Josh Brown for the third longest stretch in school history. Bushong, who shot rounds of 72 and 79, is tied for 20th at 151 and will enter Saturday's final round with a chance to become just the fourth player in program history with 30 sub-80 rounds in a season.
Senior Garrett Cox (Mahomet, Ill./Seymour) shot scores of 77 and 80 (157) to close the day in a tie for 36th. Junior Bobby Jacobs (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) was the only Brave to shoot better in the afternoon, following up a first round 82 with a 79 and is 49th in the field at 161.
Bradley's opening round score of 290 was the team's lowest round of the spring. The Braves are fourth overall in the 12-team field at 598 after shooting a second-round 308. Defending Beu/Mussatto Invitational champion Williams Woods is first in the team standings at 584, eight shots ahead of second place Indian Hills (592).
Tournament-host Western Illinois has a five-shot edge on Bradley in third at 593, with Bradley (598) and Cardinal Stritch (607) rounding out the top five.
The final round of the Beu/Mussatto Invitational will tee off Saturday at 8 a.m.
