PEORIA, Ill. -- Sophomore forward Vanessa Markert (Mt. Sterling, Ill./Brown County) has been named the Bradley COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week after helping the Bradley women's basketball team split a pair of road games last week.

Markert averaged 15.0 points per game on 63.2 percent shooting and also averaged 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks as in the two road contests.  She came off the bench to make 5-of-6 from the field and finished with 13 points, four boards, one block and one steal Friday at Wichita State.  With Chelsea Brackmann limited to two minutes in the first half, Markert scored 10 first-half points Sunday at Missouri State and went on to tie a career-high with 17 points to help highlight the overtime victory.  She was 7-for-13 from the field and also matched a career-high with four blocks to go with four rebounds and one assist to help the Braves to their first MVC overtime road win since Feb. 11, 2007.  A health science major, Markert owns a 3.68 cumulative grade point average.

Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week.  The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.

Markert and the Bradley women's basketball team open a four-game MVC home stand Friday with a 7 p.m. contest against Southern Illinois at Renaissance Coliseum.
