Game Recap: Women's Basketball |
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Freshman Chelsea Brackmann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) collected season highs of 23 points and 19 rebounds, but a late Indiana State push helped the Sycamores edge Bradley 58-51 in overtime Friday at the Hulman Center.

The Braves (4-9 overall, 0-2 MVC) turned in one of the best defensive halves in program history to open the game and led 25-12 at the break.  Indiana State (8-6 overall, 2-1 MVC) made just 1-of-14 from the field in the opening quarter, trailing 9-3 ten minutes into the tilt and went a 10-minute stretch without scoring between the first and second stanzas.

Brackmann collected 12 points and eight boards in the opening 20 minutes as she helped Bradley hold Indiana State to the lowest point total in a half (12 points) in program history.

Bradley stretched the lead to as many as 14 points early in the third quarter and led 30-16 with 6:47 to play in the third after a the second of back-to-back Brackmann hoops.

"We struggled to get the ball inside against the zone when they switched and got stagnant," said first-year Bradley head coach Andrea Gorski.  "We brought the physical toughness tonight, but need to learn to bring the mental toughness to close out games."

The Braves went cold from the field down the stretch in the third quarter and Indiana State scored the final seven points of the frame.  The 7-0 Sycamore run was part of a bigger 12-3 spurt for Indiana State, which trimmed the Bradley lead to 33-28 heading to the fourth.

Indiana State scored the first five points of the fourth on a Tierra Webb layup and Ashli O'Neal to pull even at 33-33 in the opening moments of the period.  Freshman Alona Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) had a steal and layup and a Madison Dellamuth (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie) three-pointer gave Bradley a five-point cushion (38-33) with just under seven minutes left.

Brackmann provided the only Bradley points over the next 6:30 of play and Indiana State's Ashley Taia scored six points during a 10-2 Sycamore run as the Braves trailed 43-40 in the closing seconds of regulation.

Bradley missed two shots in the closing seconds before Danielle Brewer (Coatesville, Ind.) knocked down a three-pointer from the right corner with 2.0 seconds left to send the contest to overtime knotted at 43-43.

Indiana State forced five Bradley turnovers in the extra period and made 9-of-12 free throw attempts after opening game 4-for-13 from the line to pull out the 58-51 victory.  The Sycamores led 52-46 nearing the one-minute mark, when sophomore Emily Eshoo (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) made it a three-point game (52-49) with a three.

Brackmann followed a pair of Indiana State free throws with a layup with 39 seconds left to once again make it a three-point contest.  Indiana State made 4-of-6 free throws in the closing seconds, however, and Bradley came up empty its final three possessions as the Sycamores picked up their 10th consecutive win in the series (58-51).

Brackmann turned in her first double-double of the year with 23 points, 19 rebounds and two blocks.  Senior Leti Lerma (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss to help Bradley to a 57-34 rebounding advantage.

Taia led Indiana State with 21 points, eight boards and five steals, while Regan Wentland added 14 points off the bench for the Sycamores.

Bradley closes out a seven-game road swing Sunday with a 1 p.m. game at Loyola.
