LEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore
Drake Bushong carded his school season record 34
th sub-80 round with a five-over 77 to finish 14
th and the Bradley men's golf team slipped to seventh in the final team standings at the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship Tuesday.
Bushong was one of two Braves to shoot in the 70's on the final day at Cog Hill County Club's par-72 Dubsdread Course Tuesday as he finished 14
th overall at 227.
Bradley entered the day fifth in the team standings, but carded a final round 317 to slip into seventh in the team standings at 927. The Braves finished two shots ahead of eighth-place Drake (929) and 11 shots back of sixth-place Evansville (916). Wichita State won the team title by five strokes with a three-round total of 883 to finish five-shots ahead of second-place Illinois State (888).
Bushong, who was a First-Team All-MVC performer for the second consecutive year, finished the season with a 73.91 stroke average, which ranks sixth in Bradley history in addition to breaking his own school season record of 32 sub-80 rounds with 34 rounds in the 70's or better during the 2016-17 campaign.
Sophomore
Branden Mounce missed a top-20 finish by one shot, tying for 21
st overall at 232 after a final round 81. Mounce appeared in the Bradley lineup in all but two events and finished his first season on The Hilltop third on the squad with a 75.83 stroke average.
Junior
Ethan Brue matched the final round 81 by Mounce on Tuesday and tied fellow junior
Matthew Specht for 32
nd overall at 235. Brue's team-best 73.43 stroke average for the year ranks fifth in Bradley history and helped him earn First-Team All-MVC honors in addition to MVC Newcomer of the Year. The Braves had two all-conference honorees for the second consecutive year and the MVC Newcomer of the Year honor was the first in program history.
Specht was the only other Bradley player to shoot in the 70's on the final day and matched his low round of the tournament with a 78. He tied Brue for 32
nd in the field at 235.
Junior
Zach Jewell rounded out the scoring for Bradley with a third-round 86 as he tied for 41
st overall (241).
Bradley is expected to return nearly its entire roster next season with
Bobby Jacobs the lone senior on the 2016-17 squad.
