PEORIA, Ill. – Illinois State's Jordan de los Reyes drove in four runs to help lead the Redbirds to a 6-2 victory over Bradley Tuesday afternoon as the Braves concluded the regular-season series with their I-74 rivals at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
Bradley (19-29 overall, 5-16 MVC) found itself in an early hole against league-leading Illinois State (28-17 overall, 18-3 MVC) Tuesday after the Redbirds got an early run. With runners at second and third after a walk and single to open the contest, de los Reyes drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give Illinois State an early 1-0 lead.
The Redbirds tacked on three more runs on just one hit in the second. Illinois State loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a fielder's choice for leadoff hitter Riley Hale, who drove in a run with a single to center. Shannon Felde was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in another run and it was a 4-0 Redbird lead after another sacrifice fly by de los Reyes.
In the top of the fourth, Felde had a two-out single and de los Reyes followed with a home run to center to push the Illinois State lead to 6-0.
Bradley got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning. Junior
Maria Schroeder led off the frame with her team-best 13
th double of the year and senior
Caitlyn McCarron had a single. With runners at the corners, the Braves got their first run of the day on a double play to cut the deficit to 6-1.
Sophomore
Julie Kestas took over in the circle for Bradley to open the fifth and scattered three hits over three scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Illinois State starter Sarah Finck retired Bradley in order in both the fifth and sixth, however, after giving up the run in the fourth. The Braves threatened again in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman
Kealia Wysocki tripled down the right field line and came home on an
Elizabeth Leonard single up the middle to cut the ISU advantage to four (6-2). The Redbirds turned a double play on a lineout to end the game and complete the sweep of the regular-season series.
Bradley will play the final road games on the 2017 regular-season schedule, opening a three-game series at Loyola Saturday with a noon doubleheader in Chicago.
