PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior catcher
Maria Schroeder (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) has been named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Softball Academic All-District Second Team for District V, according to an announcement by CoSIDA Thursday.
Schroeder is the first Bradley Softball player to earn academic all-district honors since Bailiegh Basham and Mariah Cole were both second-team selections in 2013 and is the 11th individual in program history to earn the distinction.
A two-time Second-Team All-MVC selection, Schroeder was a First-Team MVC Scholar-Athlete pick last year. This spring she is hitting .316 and leads the team with 13 doubles, 37 RBI and 18 walks with her 37 RBI third in the MVC. Schroeder is one of two players in The Valley with 25 runs, 35 RBI and 15 or more walks.
Schroeder as named the MVC Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 27 after helping Bradley to the title at the Mardi Gras Classic, which included a 2-1 victory at #16 Louisiana-Lafayette for the first true road win against a top-25 team in program history. Her two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth helped highlight the victory against the Ragin' Cajuns. In addition, she is a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honoree this season.
A marketing (social media) major with a 3.81 cumulative grade point average, Schroeder has hit .382 with runners in scoring position and owns a .374 average with runners on base. Fourteen of her 20 extra-base hits, including all four home runs, have come with runners on. Schroeder's team-best 37 RBI this season are tied for the eighth-best season total in school history and her 13 doubles are tied for sixth all-time on The Hilltop.
Schroeder owns the fourth-best career on base percentage (.431) in school history and her 60 career walks rank fifth all-time on The Hilltop. Her .329 career batting average is just outside the top 10 marks in Bradley history and she needs four runs and four RBI to join Natalie Quinn as the only players in program history with 100 career runs and 100 career RBI. Schroeder is the first player in program history to drive in 25 or more runs in three consecutive seasons and also owns the third-highest slugging percentage (.499) at Bradley in addition to ranking in the top 10 in school history in both runs (6th) and RBI (7th).
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.0 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution.
Schroeder and the Braves close out the 2017 regular-season schedule with a three-game home series against Indiana State, opening the set with a noon doubleheader Saturday at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
