Game Recap: Soccer | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL - The Bradley soccer team scored an 88th-minute goal to send its season opener to overtime but a late tally by Gonzaga gave the visitors a 2-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the contest with a first-half tally in the 29th minute of play. Off a free kick, Christo Michaelson finished from close range for the early 1-0 lead.

The single goal nearly held up as both teams were unable to capitalize on chances early in the second half. A loose ball in the box eluded a Bradley attacker who fell down and Younes Dayekh then had his shot blocked. On the other end, Bradley keeper Brandon Barnes stopped Gonzaga's Nick Ulowetz one-on-one to keep the Braves within striking distance.

Bradley was then able to take advantage in the closing minutes of regulation. Clark Emerson sent the ball wide to Frank Bak on the left side before Bak quickly crossed it into the box. Sophomore Roman Schindler then made his Bradley debut count, heading the ball in from 10 yards out with just 2:28 remaining to square the contest at one.

In the extra sessions, Bradley had a golden opportunity just miss when a loose ball off a free kick trickled just wide with an attacker unable to reach it and knock it in. The Bulldogs then took advantage on the other end when Austin Giftopoulos knocked in the ball off a corner kick in a scrum in front of net for the 2-1 victory with 3:16 left in the second overtime.

Gonzaga posted a 13-4 advantage in shots with an 8-5 edge in corner kicks, including the decisive one in overtime.

Barnes finished the game with four saves in his debut in the Bradley Red & White.

The Braves are back in action next weekend for a pair of games at the Proehab Aces Soccer Classic in Evansville, Indiana. Bradley opens against Northern Illinois on Friday at 4 p.m.
