Malini Wijesinghe Named COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete Of The Week

PEORIA, Ill. -- Junior women's tennis player Malini Wijesinghe (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) has been named the Bradley COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week after an undefeated week.

Wijesinghe, who was named MVC Tennis Singles Player of the Week Tuesday, dropped only six games during her two sweeps at No. 3 singles against in-state rivals Western Illinois and Eastern Illinois. She put the Braves in commanding position during the morning dual versus Western Illinois, increasing Bradley's lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. In the afternoon match against Eastern Illinois, Wijesinghe kept the Braves alive in the team standings by earning a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Wijesinghe also earned a pair of doubles victories in the two matches last week. A Spanish major, Wijesinghe owns a 3.98 cumulative grade point average.

Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week. The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.

Wijesinghe and the Bradley Women's Tennis team return to action Saturday in a 2 p.m. match at Omaha, before taking on former conference rival Creighton Sunday at 11 a.m. in Omaha, Neb.
