Southern Utah Tops Bradley Tennis

IRVINE, CA - The injury bug continues to bite the Bradley Women's Tennis team, costing the Braves (3-7) a shot at a dual match victory against Southern Utah (5-6) to start the team's spring break trip in Southern California. With Bradley forfeiting the No. 6 singles match, the Thunderbirds pulled out a 4-3 victory Monday afternoon at UC Irvine's Anteater Tennis Stadium.

Sophomore Natalia Barbery returned from a knee injury to team with freshman Sandra Maletin on a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, but after the Braves clinched the doubles point, Barbery was unable to play in the singles competition. Maletin earned a 6-3, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles and fellow freshman Victoria Gonzalez claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, but the Braves were unable to come up with the clinching point in the other three contested matches.

Alexa Brandt and Malini Wijesinghe teamed for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles, but both players dropped their singles matches in straight sets, as did freshman Kinga Kovacs. The Thunderbirds won at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 singles after earning the default point at No. 6 singles.

Bradley has two matches remaining on its trip and the Braves will take on UC Irvine Tuesday morning (9 a.m. PT) at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. Bradley will close the trip with a Wednesday afternoon dual match at UC Riverside.
