Game Recap: Softball |
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Senior Maria Schroeder opened a six-run sixth inning with a solo homer and junior Katie Habryle added a three-run shot of her own later in the frame to help Bradley rally for a 7-3 victory over IPFW in the final game of the Blues City Classic Sunday morning.

The Braves (7-8 overall) led for most of the contest, but found themselves trailing 3-1 after a three-run fifth by the Mastodons.  Both teams stranded a runner in the first and Bradley had a 1-0 lead after a RBI single by freshman Vicki Zaluske in the second.  Habryle drew a one-out walk and freshman Stacia Seeton had one of her three hits on the day with a two-out single.  Zaluske collected her first RBI as a Brave with a single to right to plate Habryle.

IPFW (7-12 overall) threatened in the top of the fourth after a leadoff walk, but Bradley starter Julie Kestas got out of the jam.  The Mastodons would go on to load the bases with just one out before Kestas struck out the next two batters to keep IPFW off the board.

Another leadoff walk in the fifth would prove costly, however, and IPFW would load the bases with just one out again.  A sacrifice fly by Stephanie Hanic tied the game at 1-1 and the Mastodons went in front 2-1 on a Maria Palmegiani single to left.  After a pitching change, Morganne Denny added an insurance run with a RBI single to center as IPFW led 3-1.

Schroeder hit her first home run of the season and the 14th of her career to leadoff the Bradley half of the sixth as the Braves pulled within a run at 3-2.  Sophomore Allison Apke drew a walk and Kealia Wysocki was hit by a pitch to a pair of runner on for Habryle, who belted a three-run homer to put the Braves back in front 5-3.  Bradley added another run on a Gabby Stoner single and a bases loaded walk by Schroeder made it a 7-3 advantage for the Braves.

Junior Megan Mahaffy, who took over in the circle for Kestas in the fifth, sat IPFW down in order in the seventh as she picked up her third victory of the weekend and improved to 3-4 on the year with the win out of the bullpen.  Mahaffy gave up two hits in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.  Kestas struck out eight in 4.2 innings of work in the start.

Schroeder extended her team-best hit streak to seven games with the home run.  She moved into fourth in school history with her 108th career run and is now fifth in Bradley history with 107 career RBI.  Schroeder also moved into a tie for fifth in career home runs on The Hilltop with her 14th

Bradley will play its first midweek game of the 2018 season, hosting Illinois Wednesday in a 6 p.m. contest at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
