Game Recap: Softball |
VALPARAISO, Ind. – Senior Maria Schroeder collected her 200th career hit in a 3-for-3 effort in the opening game of a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader, but Valparaiso pitchers limited Bradley to 11 hits and just two runs in the two games as the Crusaders topped the Braves 2-1 and 4-1 Saturday afternoon at the Valpo Softball Complex.

In the day's first game, Schroeder had the first of her three hits on the day with a first inning single only to get stranded at third.  Bradley (18-27 overall, 7-13 MVC) starter Emma Jackson worked around a leadoff single in the bottom half of the first and both starting pitchers sat the opponent down in order in the second.

Valparaiso (22-21 overall, 9-12 MVC) got the first run of the game in the bottom of the third.  Morgan Matalin led off the frame with a single and would eventually score on an Addi Burke two-out infield single to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead.

After a first-inning single, Schroeder notched the second Bradley hit of the day with a single to lead off the top of the fourth.  Schroeder's single was the 200th of her career and she is one of just four players in program history to reach the 200-hit mark.  The Braves would come up empty again, however, stranding Schroeder at third.

Bradley would threaten again in the top of the fifth, putting a pair of runners on with singles by Gabby Stoner and Jillian Navarro.  Senior Elizabeth Leonard ripped a single to left, but Valparaiso was able to throw out Stoner at the plate to end the inning and keep the Braves off the scoreboard.

Jackson gave up a one-out double in a scoreless fifth inning and Bradley would tie the game up at 1-1 on a Schroeder homer to lead off the top of the sixth.  Schroeder took over sole possession of Bradley history with her 17th career home run as the teams would head to the seventh knotted at 1-1.

Valparaiso starter Kelsie Packard, who struck out seven in the win, retired Bradley in order in the top of the seventh.  Matalin got things started for the Crusaders in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out single.  After a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning, Carly Trepanier singled through the right side of the infield and a Bradley error on the play allowed Lanie Callaghan to come around all the way from first on the play to give Valparaiso a 2-1 walk-off victory.

Jackson suffered the loss for Bradley despite, holding Valparaiso to just two runs (one earned) and scattering six hits in the complete game effort as she fell to 7-6 on the season.

Bradley threatened early in the nightcap with Leonard walking to open the contest and Schroeder hit by a pitch.  A double play and a groundout helped Valpo starter Kenzie Grossman get out of the jam unscathed.

The Crusaders answered with a run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead.  Trepanier singled to open the inning and moved to second on a BU error.  Brittany Anderson got Valparaiso on the scoreboard later in the frame with a two-out single up the middle to drive in Trepanier from third.

Neither team mounted much of a threat over the next three innings, until Bradley would strike to tie it up at 1-1 with a run in the top of the fifth.  Back-to-back two-out Valpo errors put a pair of Braves on base and Leonard provided the big hit of the inning with a RBI double down the left field line to drive in Navarro from second with the tying run.

Another Bradley error would help lead to a three-run bottom of the fifth for Valparaiso as the Crusaders went back in front 4-1.  Trepanier helped spark a two-out rally with a triple and scored on a Taylor Lawson single to give Valpo a 2-1 lead.  A hit batter and walk loaded the bases, before a BU error that would have ended the inning allowed two more runs to cross.

The Braves left runners at the corners in the top of the sixth and tried to rally again in the seventh.  Navarro led off the seventh with a single, but a groundout and a pair of fielder's choices ended the BU threat as Valparaiso closed out a 4-1 victory to sweep the doubleheader.

Junior Julie Kestas suffered the loss for the Braves, giving up four runs (one earned) and six hits in the setback.

Bradley and Valparaiso will close out the series Sunday with an 11 a.m. game at the Valpo Softball Complex.
