Braves Draw Gonzaga in Season Opener

PEORIA, IL – The Bradley soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 2-2 home draw against Gonzaga, rallying with a second-half tally to earn a point in its opener.
 
Sophomore Gerit Wintermeyer netted the team's first goal of the season to give the Braves the early lead. After a foul outside the box, Wintermeyer tallied the goal with a strike from 25 yards out on the ensuing free kick in the 19th minute of the game.
 
Gonzaga, however, would answer back with a pair of first-half goals. Joe Corner found the upper corner in the 32nd minute for the 1-1 contest before Demitrius Kigeya gathered a loose ball on the edge of the box and beat the goalie at the far post for the 2-1 advantage at the intermission.
 
The Braves fought back and after some sustained pressure, took advantage of a foul in the box. Senior Alex Ciaramitaro fired his penalty kick down the middle and past the diving netminder, tying the game at two in the 71st minute.
 
Both teams had chances in the remaining 40 minutes but it was redshirt junior Albert Reinwart making a pair of key saves in the closing minutes of regulation to keep Bradley knotted at two. Then in the extra session, John Pollifrone cleared a ball off the line as the Braves fought the Bulldogs to a draw.
 
Gonzaga finished with a slight edge in shots, 14-13, while holding a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. Reinwart recorded five saves in just his second collegiate start, while Ben Willis made three stops for Gonzaga.
 
Bradley is back in action on Sunday with a home game against Oral Roberts. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Shea Stadium.
