PEORIA, Ill. -- Senior runner Michael Ward (Cardiff, South Wales/Llanishen) has been named the Bradley COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week announced Wednesday after topping his own school record in the 3,000 meters.

Just two weeks removed from clocking the second-fastest 3,000-meter time in Missouri Valley Conference history, Ward broke his owns school mark in the event again at last weekend's Iowa State Classic.  He topped his own personal best in the 3,000 meters by over a half second, clocking a time of 7:57.22.  His time ranks 31st in the nation this indoor season and is second in conference history behind Julian Mwangi of Illinois State, who ran a 7:55.40 in 1999.  A graduate student with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as he pursues a master's in business administration, Ward earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry.

Each week, a Bradley student-athlete is selected as the COUNTRY Financial Scholar-Athlete of the Week.  The individual chosen must be at least a sophomore in class standing and boast a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average, while displaying a level of athletic excellence.

The Bradley Track & Field teams are slated to compete Saturday at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., in the team's final competition before the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championship in Cedar Falls, Iowa, Feb. 23 & 24.
