Men’s Golf Fourth After Day One At MVC Championship

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. – Defending Missouri Valley Conference medalist Drake Bushong fired a pair of 72's and is sixth in the individual standings, while the Bradley men's golf team is fourth overall after day one at the 2019 MVC Men's Golf Championship Monday.

Bradley, which claimed the 2018 MVC team title, carded rounds of 302 and 301 to finish the day fourth in the team standings at 603 at the par-72 Club at Porto Cima. Tournament-host Missouri State is 12 shots ahead of the Braves in third at 591, while Southern Illinois is second at 578, one shot back of pre-championship favorite and day-one leader Illinois State, which sits at one-over par 577.

Valparaiso is two shots behind Bradley in fifth (605) and Loyola follows in sixth overall at 607 in the nine-team field.

Illinois State's David Rauer had the low round of the day with a six-under 66 in the first round and has a one-shot lead atop the individual leaderboard three-under (141).

Bushong is just three shots off the lead alone in sixth at even par 142 after shooting a pair of 72's Monday to pace the Braves. He moved into a tie for third in career rounds played (124) at Bradley with Jerry Young (1973-77) as Bushong tries to lock up his fourth All-MVC honor.

Playing in his first MVC Championship, junior Charles Jahn shot a two-over 74 in the first round and was 11^th in the standings heading into the day's second round. He turned in a four-over 76 in the afternoon and will enter the final round 14^th overall at 150, six back of Bushong and three strokes out of the top 10.

Senior Branden Mounce helped highlight Monday's play with an eagle on the par-5, 544-yard 8th hole, during an opening-round 78. Tied for 21^st overall at 154, Mounce shot a second-round 76.

The only Bradley player to have a better round in the afternoon, senior Michael Mounce followed up a first-round 79 with a second-round 77. Two shots back of his brother, Michael closed Monday's action in a tie for 29^th (156).

Senior Daniel Lensing rounded out the team scoring for Bradley in a tie for 39^th overall at 159, after posting rounds of 78 and 81 Monday.

The final round of the 2019 MVC Championship tees off Tuesday at 8 a.m. with Bradley in the first group of teams starting on the first hole.
