DEKALB, IL – Senior David Schulte Sudhoff scored his first career goal in the 63rd minute to pull Bradley within 2-1, but the Braves (1-2-2) could not come up with the equalizer in their first road game of the 2019 season Sunday afternoon at Northern Illinois Soccer and Track & Field Complex.

The host Huskies (1-4-1) scored twice in a span of 2-minutes, 15-seconds midway through the first half to take control.  Jan Maertins gave NIU a 1-0 lead by finishing off a transition sequence at 31:22 and Nick Markanich tallied what proved to be the game-winner at 33:37.

In his second year at Bradley as a graduate student from Germany, Schulte Sudhoff delivered a professional finish to give the Braves new life midway through the second half.  Bradley's scoring play began from a far side throw in.  NIU attempted to clear the throw with a contested header in the box, but Schulte Sudhoff charged the loose ball from outside the "D" and gave it a clean strike just before the ball bounced, sending a laser from the top of the 18 into the top left corner.

Although Northern Illinois finished the game with an 18-7 advantage in shots, Bradley kept up the pressure until the game's final whistle and just missed the framework on a corner kick opportunity in the closing seconds.

After Bradley's program-record-tying non-conference unbeaten streak came to an end at 17 games with Friday's 1-0 loss to Eastern Illinois, the Braves will have five days to prepare for their Missouri Valley Conference opener Saturday at Drake.  The 6 p.m. game against the Bulldogs is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN3.
