Game Recap: Softball |
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Senior Emma Jackson had her team-best fourth complete game effort of the year and junior Vicki Zaluske drove in a pair in a 2-for-3 outing at the plate to help Bradley Softball to an 8-5 victory over Portland State during the second day of the Gaucho Classic.

The Braves (10-7 overall) improved to 3-1 in tournament play and are now 9-4 in their last 13 contests with the team's 10-7 record the best mark for Bradley through 17 games since 2007 (11-6).  The bottom of the lineup helped the Braves to the win with the last five hitters collecting nine of BU's 11 hits.

Portland State's Tayler Gunesch led off the bottom of the first and scored on a groundout to give the Vikings an early 1-0 lead.

Bradley answered with three runs in the top of the second, however, to go in front 3-1.  Junior Stacia Seeton walked to start the inning and consecutive singles by fellow junior Taise Thompson and senior Brooklyn Bane loaded the bases with no outs.  Zaluske drew a walk to drive in a run and tie things up at 1-1.  Sophomore Lucy Mead gave Bradley a 2-1 lead with sacrifice fly in foul territory and fellow sophomore Camryn Monteer reached on an error to allow another run to cross as the Braves led 3-1.

Portland State scraped together another run in the bottom of the third to cut the BU advantage to 3-2.  Gunesch singled back to Jackson to open the frame and Marrisa Bruno followed with a single of her own to put two on.  After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Emily Johansen plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

A four-run top of the fifth pushed the Bradley lead to 7-2.  Senior Kealia Wysocki led off the inning with a double and a hit batter and single loaded the bases.  Seeton drove in a run with a bases loaded single and the BU advantage was 6-2 after a two-run single by Zaluske.  The fifth Portland State error of the game allowed another run to cross.

A Bradley error to start the bottom of the fifth led to a pair of unearned runs.  Gunesch reached on an error to start the frame and a two-out, two-run homer off the bat of Emily Johansen pulled Portland State within three at 7-4.

The Braves were able to answer with a run in the top of the sixth after sophomore Samantha Smith had a one-out triple.  Apke drove in her fourth run of the day with a RBI single up the middle to give Bradley an 8-4 edge.

Gunesch, who scored three of Portland State's five runs, was at it again in the seventh trying to spark a Vikings' rally.  After a walk to open the bottom of the seventh, Gunesch moved to second on a passed ball and took third on a Bruno single.  The Braves conceded a run on a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning and a 6-4-3 double play closed out the 8-5 Bradley victory.

Jackson evened her season record at 4-4 with the complete game win, scattering eight hits and two walks as she earned her 18th career victory.

Bradley closes out play at the Gaucho Classic Sunday with an 11 a.m. (CST) game against Saint Peter's.
