Austin Peay Edges Bradley Softball 3-2 In 10 Innings

Game Recap: Softball |
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Allison Apke hit a game-tying solo homer in the sixth, but Austin Peay was able to scrape together a run in the top of the 10th as the Governors edged Bradley Softball 3-2 Friday night at the Governors Classic.

The 10-inning contest was the longest for the Braves (11-9 overall) since 2015 and came on the heels of an eight-inning game against Purdue Fort Wayne earlier in the day as Bradley played consecutive extra-inning games for the first time dating back to March of 2016.

Bradley got on the scoreboard first, scoring a run in the top of the first.  Junior Vicki Zaluske got things started with a one-out walk and stole second before eventually coming around to score on a two-out double by senior Kealia Wysocki.

Austin Peay (7-10 overall) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning, however.  Just like Bradley did in the top half of the inning, Austin Peay got a one-out walk and Brooke Pfefferle stole second.  She scored on a single off the bat of Lexi Osowski to tie things up at 1-1.  A walk, wild pitch and groundout led to Osowski coming home to give the Governors a 2-1 lead.

Austin Peay left two runners on in both the second and fourth innings, while Bradley came up empty on its scoring chances in the middle innings.  The Braves were finally able to tie it up at 2-2 in the top of the sixth on a two-out, solo homer by senior Allison Apke.  The homer was Apke's fourth of the season and 31st of her career.

After retiring Austin Peay in order in the bottom of the sixth, senior starter Emma Jackson had to work out of a jam in the seventh.  Jackson surrendered back-to-back one-out singles, only to get a strikeout and a groundout in the bottom of the seventh as the teams went to the eighth tied at 2-2.

Apke led off the top of the ninth with a walk and the Braves had runners at the corners with two outs following a Grace French walk.  Austin Peay starter Harley Mullinsh struck out the next batter she faced, however, to keep the Braves from plating the go-ahead run.

Jackson retired Austin Peay in order in the bottom half of the ninth on just five pitches, getting a pair of groundouts and a popout.

The international tie-breaker was put in play for the 10th as sophomore Lucy Mead started the top of the 10th at second for the Braves.  A sacrifice bunt and Stacia Seeton walk once again put runners on the corners, but a popout and flyout ended the Bradley threat.

Bailey Shorter was at second to start the Austin Peay half of the 10th and came home with the game winner on a Pfefferle single to center as the Governors pulled out the 3-2 victory.

Jackson struck out five and scattered six hits as she tossed nine full innings for the longest outing of her career.

Bradley has a rematch with Austin Peay Saturday, facing the Governors in a 3:30 p.m. game before a 6 p.m. contest against Purdue Fort Wayne during the second day of the Governors Classic.
