Game Recap: Softball |
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Bradley Softball erased a 6-0 deficit with a six-run bottom of the sixth as the Braves went to extra innings for the first time this season, but Purdue Fort Wayne pushed three runs across in the top of the eighth to win 9-6 in the opening game of the Governors Classic Friday.

Fort Wayne pitchers held Bradley (11-8 overall) to just five hits and the Mastodons were able to take advantage of three BU errors.  Playing in her home state for the first time as a Braves, Cookeville, Tenn., native Morgan Radford took the loss for Bradley despite a season-high 13 strikeouts.  Her 13 strikeouts were the most by a Bradley pitcher since Ashley Birdsong fanned 14 against #5 Northwestern on March 1, 2008.

The Braves found themselves in an early hole after Fort Wayne scored a run in the top of the first on a double off the bat of Kyndell Ethridge.  The Mastodons added a run in the top of the third after Mariah Grant led off the inning with a single and stolen base.  Ethridge drove in another run with her second double of the game to give Fort Wayne a 2-0 lead.

Bradley trailed 3-0 after Fort Wayne added a run in the fourth and two BU errors helped lead to a pair of runs in the fifth as the Mastodons pushed the lead to 5-0.

The Braves managed just one hit through the first four innings and had their best scoring chance to that point in the fifth, loading the bases on an error, hit batter and Jillian Navarro single.  A fly out ended the threat, however.

Fort Wayne added another run in the sixth to push the lead to 6-0.

Bradley answered with a six-run bottom half of the inning.  Stacia Seeton and Allison Apke sandwiched walks around a Taise Thompson single to load the bases.  Sophomore Grace French plated the first run of the frame with a single to left.  Another run came home on a groundout and sophomore Lucy Mead was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut the deficit to 6-3.  Navarro collected her second hit of the day to drive home another run.  Seeton and Thompson capped the inning with each drawing bases loaded walks to tie the score at 6-6.

Radford got out a jam in the top of the seventh after back-to-back singles to open the inning to keep the score knotted at 6-6.  The Braves were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh, however, as Bradley went to extra innings for the first time this season.

A three-run top of the eighth gave Fort Wayne the 9-6 victory.  Mariah Grant legged out a leadoff triple and scored the go-ahead run on a Madeline Swart single.  A Bradley error helped led to another Mastodon run and Fort Wayne was able to push another run across on a caught stealing to take a 9-6 lead.

Bradley continues play at the Governors Classic this afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. game against tournament-host Austin Peay.
