Game Recap: Soccer | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
PEORIA, IL – The Jim DeRose coaching era at Bradley kicked off in dramatic fashion as the Braves (1-0-0) opened the 1996 season with a 2-1, overtime victory against Northeastern Illinois (0-1-0) Saturday evening at Becker Park.

A trio of seniors handled the heavy lifting for the Braves as Jamie Burton registered a goal and an assist, keeper Elliott Sorkin made five saves and forward Pat Kane nodded home the game-winner with just 1-minute, 5-seconds left in extra time, delivering the rookie head coach a victory in his first game at the Bradley helm.

Bradley dominated possession throughout the game, finishing with a 25-8 advantage in shots, including a 15-6 margin in shots on goal.  Although the Northeastern Illinois keeper proved tough to beat with his 13 saves, Burton broke through with an unassisted goal to net the season's first tally at 54:51.

Although Sorkin proved equally tough between the Bradley pipes, NEIU managed to find an equalizer in the 68th minute on a finish by Courtney Viamille, ultimately forcing DeRose's debut into 30 minutes of extra time.

The Braves continued their dominance of possession in overtime with a 10-2 edge in shots during the extra time, but it wasn't until Burton's cross met Kane's head in the 119th minute that Bradley would find its winner.

Bradley will hit the road for its next three games, before returning home to Becker Park Sept. 15 for a 2 p.m. matinee against Kentucky.
