PEORIA, Ill. – Junior Taise Thompson smacked a go-ahead, two-run homer to highlight a three-run fifth inning and freshman Camryn Schaller came out of the bullpen to earn her first career save as Bradley Softball rallied for a 5-4 victory over Saint Louis Monday at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome.
Bradley (1-2 overall) had to rally from behind after Saint Louis (0-1 overall) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Billikens wasted no time getting on the board, putting a pair in scoring position in the top of the first inning with only one out. Aubrey Hacke gave Saint Louis a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right center.
Gabbie Kowalik later made it a 3-0 Billiken advantage with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning.
Bradley answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull within one at 3-2. Sophomore Camryn Monteer and junior Vicki Zaluske led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Monteer would eventually score on a wild pitch and freshman Avry Blume plated Zaluske with a double down the left field line.
The Billikens struck for another run in the top of the fifth to push the lead to 4-2. Kat Lane singled to start the inning and stole second before coming around to score on one of Kowalik's two doubles on the day.
Monteer would again get things started for the Braves in the bottom half of the inning, ripping a single to the left side. She stole second and moved to third on a ground out for Blume, who smacked her second double of the day to drive home Monteer from third. With Bradley trailing 4-3, Thompson belted her first homer of the year and 12th of her career with a two-run shot that put the Braves in front 5-4.
Morgan Radford, who earned the win for Bradley out of the bullpen, scattered two hits and one run in her 2.1 innings of work. She gave way to freshman Camryn Schaller with one out and the potential tying run on third in the sixth. Schaller got a strikeout and flyout to get out of the jam and worked around a one-out single in the seventh to lock up her first career save.
Bradley returns to action next week, hosting Illinois-Springfield Tuesday, March 2 in a single game at 11 a.m. at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome.
