Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Grace French picked up the victory in the circle and went 2-for-3 with a three-run homer to help Bradley Softball wrap up a season-opening four-game home stand with an 8-2 victory over Illinois-Springfield Tuesday at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome.

French struck out three and gave up a single in her two innings of work as she evened her record at 1-1 on the year with the victory.  She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a three-run homer and two runs scored to help highlight a 12-hit effort for the Braves, who improved to a 2-2 on the season.

Junior Vicki Zaluske was 3-for-3 with a solo homer in the fifth, her second career dinger, and scored twice; while Lucy Mead went 2-for-4 with two runs to help lead Bradley's offensive efforts.

Bradley didn't waste any time jumping out to an early lead, with the first three hitters in the lineup reaching base to start the contest.  French followed a bunt single by Mead with a single of her own and junior Jillian Navarro drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases.  Samantha Smith drove in Mead from third with a single to right and sophomore Camryn Monteer delivered a two-out, two-run single that gave Bradley a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

French worked around a leadoff single for a scoreless top of the second and then delivered the big hit of the contest in the bottom half of the inning.  Bradley had a pair on after Zalukse led off the inning with a double and Mead had another bunt single when French ripped a three-run homer to left.  The Braves added another run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Stacia Seeton that pushed the BU advantage to 7-0.

UIS managed to manufacture a run in the top of the third, loading the bases with one out on three walks.  The Prairie Stars eventually pushed a run across on a groundout by Ashley Klinzing.

Illinois-Springfield was able to push another run across in the top of the fifth.  Kelsie Burrows led off the inning with a single and found herself at third after a stolen base and while pitch.  She eventually came home on another wild pitch as UIS cut the Bradley lead to 7-2.

Bradley added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a one-out solo home from Zaluske that pushed the lead back to six (8-2).

Freshman Raegan Branon worked around a two-out walk for a scoreless sixth for Bradley and fellow freshman Camryn Schaller came on in the seventh, retiring UIS in order to close things out.

Bradley hits the road this weekend, heading to Louisville, Ky., for the Cardinal Classic where the Braves open tournament action Friday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against tournament-host Louisville.
