Game Recap: Softball |
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Lucy Mead went 2-for-2 with a run scored and the duo of Taise Thompson and Avry Blume each drove in runs for Bradley Softball, but preseason MVC favorite Southern Illinois used a four-run third to blow open the game as the Salukis completed the series sweep with a 10-2 victory over the Braves Sunday afternoon at Charlotte West Stadium.

Southern Illinois (23-5 overall, 5-3 MVC) wasted no time getting on the board, pushing a pair of runs across in the bottom of the first.  The Salukis had runners at second and third with one out for Jenny Jansen, who drove in the first run of the contest with a sacrifice fly.  Katelyn Massa drove in another run with a two-out double to right center as SIU grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Bradley (9-10 overall, 2-4 MVC) threatened in the top of the third after a one-out Lucy Mead single followed a Vicki Zaluske leadoff single to put two runners on.  A fielder's choice and pop out ended the BU threat, however.

A four-run third for Southern Illinois broke the game open.  With two on and one out, Jansen drove in another run with a single to right and Massa followed with a three-run homer to right to push the Saluki advantage to 6-0.

The Braves got to SIU starter Carlee Jo Clack in the fourth.  Stacia Seeton led off the frame with a single and moved to third when Samantha Smith reached on an error.  Thompson later drove in Seeton from third with a sacrifice fly to cut the SIU lead to 6-1.

Southern Illinois got the run back in the bottom half of the inning.  Maddy Vermejan, who walked in her first two plate appearances, had a one out single and stole second.  SIU had runners at the corners after a Bailey Caylor infield single and Vermejan would eventually score on a Maris Boelens groundout that made the score 7-1 in favor of SIU.

Mead, who went 2-for-2 with a run scored, had a one-out single in the Bradley half of the fifth to spark a rally attempt.  Camryn Monteer followed with a single of her own to force a pitching change and Blume drove in Mead from second with a single to center.  The Braves were unable to cut any further into Southern Illinois lead, however, trailing 7-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

Three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth would close out the 10-2 SIU victory.  After a pair of walks to open the inning, it appeared Bradley might get out of the inning unscathed after turning a double play.  A walk kept the inning alive, however, and a Bradley error that would have ended the inning loaded the bases.  Vermejan drew her third walk of the afternoon to plate the first run of the inning and another run came home on a passed ball.  Caylor capped the 10-2 win for the Salukis with a RBI single to right.

Bradley opens a three-game home series Friday with a noon doubleheader against Missouri State at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
