Game Recap: Soccer | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
EUREKA, IL – Of the 16 players who took the field for Bradley Soccer in its unusual Missouri Valley Conference opener Thursday, 11 were first- and second-year players, but it was the team's two graduates who delivered the heroics.  Senior Gerit Wintermeyer scored the game's lone goal in the 14th minute and senior keeper Bryce Logan delivered a pair of rapid-fire saves in the final minute as the Braves (2-1-0, 1-1-0 MVC) held on for a 1-0 victory against Evansville (0-3-0, 0-1-0 MVC) at Eureka's Pete FioRito Stadium at McKinzie Field.

Wintermeyer became the fourth player in Bradley Soccer history to reach double-digits in career game-winning goals.  Sophomores Danny Collins and Daniel Chandler set up the scoring play by working the right flank.  Chandler then sent a service from near the far touch line and the ball worked its way across the goal mouth, to a wide open Wintermeyer at the left post for the easy tap-in.

Bradley has played Evansville four times in its last 13 games, dating to the 2019 season, and Wintermeyer has scored all six goals in the four Bradley wins.

The Braves seemed to be in control of the match until the 75th minute when freshman Patrick Fishburne was issued a straight red following an altercation by the far corner on Bradley's offensive end.

Though the Braves generated the first scoring chance after going a man down on a Wintermeyer breakaway, Evansville was granted a penalty kick in the 82nd minute when defender Jake Schoffstall got tangled up with an Aces attacker on a crossing pass.  Pablo Guillen took the PK for Evansville, but with Logan diving to the left post, the Aces striker clanked his attempt off the right post.

Logan came up big as the clock ticked into the final minute, first stopping a Guillen blast from the top of the box with a 1-handed effort, then blocking Nkosi Graham's rebound attempt while still on the ground and ultimately forcing Graham's second attempt wide of the net with 1-minute remaining.

A scheduled home game for the Braves, Thursday's game was played on the artificial surface at McKinzie Field as Shea Stadium's natural playing surface continues to thaw.  The Eureka College facility becomes the seventh venue to host a Bradley Soccer home game and the second in as many games this year away from Shea Stadium.  Bradley opened the delayed season with a 3-2 win Feb. 3 against Eastern Illinois at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex Slugger Dome.

The Braves plan to open Shea Stadium when the return to action Tuesday by hosting Valley rival Drake in a 6 p.m. kickoff.  A limited number of seats will be available for Tuesday's game with first priority for reserved-only seating being given to the student-athlete pass lists from both teams and Bradley University students.  Bradley will announce the availability of general public tickets Monday afternoon.  The complete Bradley Soccer 2021 Spring Ticket Policy is available for review at BradleyBraves.com beneath the Tickets menu.
