Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Morgan Radford was one pitch away from a complete game victory, but Indiana State's Amanda Guercio highlighted a three-run seventh for the Sycamores as Bradley Softball fell 5-4 Sunday at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex to close out the series.

After taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader, Bradley (15-13 overall, 8-7 MVC) was on the verge of completing the series sweep of Indiana State (15-19 overall, 8-7 MVC) for the second time in the last three years.

Indiana State managed to score three runs in the seventh, however, with Guercio's two-run triple tying the game at 4-4.

The Braves had an early lead thanks to a two-run single by Taise Thompson in the bottom of the first.  Camryn Monteer led off the inning with a single and Avry Blume reached on an error on her sacrifice attempt to put two runners on.  Thompson, who drove in five in the three-game series, ripped an 0-2 pitch down the right field line to drive in both runners and give Bradley a 2-0 advantage.

Indiana State managed to tie it up with a pair in the top of the third.  Abi Chipps led off the inning with a single and Olivia Patton followed with a bunt single.  Chipps scored the first run of the inning on a fielder's choice comebacker to Radford and Guercio ripped the first of her two triples down the right field line to plate another run as the Sycamores pulled even at 2-2.

Bradley took advantage of Indiana State miscues to recapture the lead in the fifth.  Lucy Mead put down a bunt single and swiped second.  After a Monteer walk, the pair stole third and second.  An Indiana State error on the play allowed Mead to race home with the go-ahead run and a Stacia Seeton sacrifice fly later plated Monteer as Bradley went back in front 4-2.

The Braves had to escape a jam in the sixth after three straight two-out Indiana State singles loaded the bases.  Radford got a groundout to end the threat, however, as Bradley took a 4-2 lead into the seventh.

Indiana State opened the top of the seventh with a bunt single by Chipps and infield single by Patton to put the tying run on.  Radford induced a groundout for the first out of the inning and a Bella Peterson pop out was the second out of the frame.  Indiana State was down to its final strike, with Guercio facing a 1-2 count when she smacked a triple to left center that drove home both runners.  Isabella Henning knocked in Guercio from third with what proved to be the game winner with a single to right.

Radford tried to spark a Bradley rally in the bottom of the seventh, opening the inning with a single after she doubled in the second inning for her first career hit.  A sacrifice bunt and groundout moved Radford to third, but Indiana State reliever Lexi Benko got a groundout to close out the 5-4 Sycamore win as she earned her second save of the year.

Bradley returns to action Wednesday, opening a five-game road swing with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at I-74 rival Illinois State.
