Game Recap: Softball | | Bobby Parker, Associate AD for Communications
CEDAR FALLS, IA – Camryn Monteer drove in three and Grace French twirled a complete game, leading Bradley to a 6-3 win in the opening game, but host Northern Iowa answered with a 4-1 win in the nightcap as the Missouri Valley Conference rivals split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Robinson-Dresser Complex.

The teams will play the rubber game in the 3-game Valley series Sunday, meeting at 11 a.m. at Robinson-Dresser Complex.

GAME 1 RECAP:  Bradley 6, UNI 3
Monteer got the day started off on the right foot by drawing a leadoff walk and she came around to score in the first inning on Avry Blume's RBI double.  Blume pushed the early Bradley lead to 2-0, scoring on an error by Panthers pitcher Erica Oler (L, 5-5).

After singles by Morgan Radford and Samantha Smith, Lucy Mead drew a 2-out walk to load the bases for Monteer in the fourth and the Braves thirdbaseman delivered with a bases clearing double into the right center field gap for a 5-0 lead.  Taise Thompson stretched the lead to 6-0 with a solo homer in the fifth inning.

Although UNI chipped away at the lad with single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning, French (W, 6-4) battled through to finish her pitching effort.  French scattered six hits, walked three and struck out three.

Led by Blume's 2-for-4 effort, the Braves finished with a 7-6 advantage in hits.  Mead also reached safely in all three of her plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with two walks.

GAME 2 RECAP:  UNI 4, Bradley 1
Bradley outhit the hosts, 6-5, but UNI rode Daryn Lamprecht's 2-run home run in the first inning to a 4-1 win in Saturday's second game.

Samantha Smith puleed the Braves to within 2-1 with a RBI double in the second, but Emmy Wells added insurance for the Panthers with a sacrifice fly in the third inning and a RBI double in the fifth to set the final score.

Stacia Seeton and Taise Thompson joined Smith by going 2-for-3 in the second game.  Smith and Thompson both banged out three hits on the day.  Thompson also pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief of starter Camryn Schaller (L, 4-3), who allowed four runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in her 4.2 innings.
