Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Grace French threw a complete game two-hit shutout and Bradley broke up a perfect game bid by Illinois State starter Morgan Day with a pair of doubles in the bottom of the sixth as the Braves topped the first-place Redbirds 1-0 Tuesday afternoon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

French worked around five walks and struck out five in the complete game effort as she improved to 7-4 on the year with the two-hit blanking of an Illinois State (27-7 overall, 13-3 MVC) squad that entered the contest not giving up a run in its last 26 innings. In fact, the Redbirds had outscored their opponents 25-0 in their last four outings.

Bradley (17-17 overall, 10-11 MVC) got the only run of the contest in the sixth after not having a single baserunner in the first five frames.  Jillian Navarro, who homered twice in Sunday's game at Northern Iowa, led off the BU half of the sixth with a double to right center and moved to third on a fly out to center by Samantha Smith.  Navarro came home on a two-out double down the left field line off the bat of Camryn Monteer to give the Braves a 1-0 lead.

French struck out the first two batters of the seventh and got a groundout from pinch hitter Brandi LaFountaine to close out the complete game shutout.

Illinois State threatened early, stranding a total of six runners in the first four innings.  French, who worked out of a first and third jam in the second, retired the final 10 batters she faced to earn the victory.

The Braves improved to 11-5 at home on the year for the team's highest home victory total since 2015 (12-6) and are now 8-2 at home in conference action.

Bradley returns to action this weekend, opening a three-game series at Evansville with a noon doubleheader Saturday.
