Game Recap: Softball |
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Taise Thompson hit a grand slam to highlight the day for Bradley Softball, but Evansville belted a combined six homers in both games as the Aces topped the Braves 6-4 and 10-4 Saturday afternoon to open a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Evansville (22-19 overall, 10-12 MVC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a grand slam in the bottom of the first.  The Aces had a runner at first with two outs when Jessica Fehr singled for the first hit of the contest and UE loaded the bases with a walk by Jenna Lis.  Haley Woolf ripped a grand slam to left to put the Aces in front 4-0.

Woolf homered again in the bottom of the fifth to push the Evansville lead to 6-0.  Fehr was hit by a pitch with one out and Woolf ripped a two-out, two-run homer to left for her second dinger of the day.

Bradley (17-19 overall, 10-13 MVC) managed just one hit through the first five innings off Evansville starter Izzy Vetter before finally breaking through in the top of the sixth.  Lucy Mead got things started with a one-out double and Camryn Monteer followed with a walk.  The Braves loaded the bases on a Stacia Seeton walk for Thompson, who ripped a two-out grand slam to left to pull the Braves within two at 6-4.

Trailing 6-4 heading to the seventh, Bradley tried to rally.  With two outs, Mead reached on a dropped third strike and Monteer legged out an infield single to put two runners on.  Another dropped third strike allowed Seeton to reach base and loaded the bases for the Braves.  Jaime Nurrenbern took over in the circle for the Aces and got a groundout, however, to close out the 6-4 UE win.

Grace French matched a career-high with eight strikeouts in the complete game effort in the opener for BU.

In the nightcap, Evansville wasted no time getting in front with leadoff hitter Eryn Gould hitting a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first.  The Aces ended up loading the bases with a hit batter, single and walk before Alyssa Barela drove in the second UE run of the frame with a bases loaded groundout to the right side of the infield.

A two-out walk in the bottom of the second ended up proving costly with Gould drawing the free pass to start the inning.  Evansville had two on with two outs after a Katie McLean infield single for Woolf, who smacked her third homer of the day with a three-run shot down the left field line that gave the Aces a 5-0 advantage.  Marah Wood made it a 6-0 UE lead with a solo homer in the bottom of the third.

Bradley got three runs in the top of the fourth to cut the Evansville lead in half.  Thompson led off the Bradley half of the inning with a single and Vicki Zaluske followed with a double to right.  Keeler van Breusegen drove in both runners with a single up the middle and later scored when Samantha Smith reached on an Evansville error as Bradley trailed 6-3 heading to the bottom of the fourth.

A leadoff walk and Bradley error in the bottom of the fifth proved costly with Evansville getting all three runs back in the frame.  The walk and error led to a run and the Aces added another run on a one-out groundout off the bat of Allison Daggett to give UE an 8-3 advantage.  Gould ripped a single to right center and eventually scored on a two-out single to left by McLean as the lead was back to six (9-3) after five innings of play.  The Purple Aces made it a 10-3 lead with a solo homer from Fehr in the bottom of the sixth.

Mead ripped a solo homer to left center in the top of the seventh to cut the Aces' advantage to 10-4, but a pair of groundouts closed out the UE win.

The teams close out the series Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m.
