Game Recap: Softball |
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Taise Thompson drove in all three Bradley runs and Grace French struck out three in a complete game effort as the duo helped Bradley Softball to a 3-2 victory over #7 seed Indiana State in the second round of the 2021 Missouri Valley Conference Championship Thursday afternoon.

With the victory, Bradley (20-21 overall) moves on to a third round matchup later today with the Braves facing #3 seed Missouri State in a 7 p.m. contest.

Indiana State (20-28 overall) took advantage of a Bradley error to plate a run in the top of the first.  The Sycamores had runners at first and third after a double and single to start the contest and a throwing error trying to turn a double play on a lineout led to the first run of the contest.

Bradley tied it up with a run in the bottom of the third.   After retiring Indiana State in order in the top of the inning, French led off the Bradley half of the frame with a single to left center and freshman Jordy van der Werf was hit by a pitch.  A bunt single by Lucy Mead loaded the bases and Thompson plated Bradley's first run of the day with a two-out bases loaded walk to tie it up at 1-1.

Thompson drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to put Bradley in front.  With two outs and runners at second and third after singles by Mead and Camryn Monteer, Thompson ripped the first pitch she saw off the wall in left to drive on both base runners as the Braves grabbed a 3-1 lead.

After a leadoff single to start the top of the second, French retired 11 consecutive batters before a two-out error in top of the fifth snapped the streak.

Indiana State finally mounted a threat in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with no outs on three straight hits.  Annie Tokarek hit into a fielder's choice, with Mead throwing out Bella Peterson at the plate.  Bradley tried to turn a double play on the ground ball with van der Werf's throw to first hitting Tokarek in the back and she was ruled out for running inside the base line.  A lineout ended the Indiana State threat as the Braves took a 3-1 lead into the seventh.

In the seventh, Mallory Marsicek made it a one-run Bradley lead (3-2) with a solo homer to left center to open the inning.  French got a strikeout and flyout before a two-out single and closed out the complete game victory with a fly out to left as the Braves moved on with the 3-2 win.  French improved to 8-6 on the year with the victory, scattering eight hits and giving up only one earned run.
