Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Senior Jillian Navarro homered for the second straight day, smacking a solo shot in the final home at bat of her collegiate career; but Bradley was unable to claim the series sweep of Drake with the Bulldogs taking Sunday's series finale 11-2 at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

Navarro, who drove in seven runs during Saturday's doubleheader sweep for Bradley (19-21 overall, 12-15 MVC), smacked a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth to help highlight the day for the Braves.  Drake (18-29 overall, 12-14 MVC) tallied 13 hits, however, and posted an 11-2 victory in the battle for sole possession for fifth in the final MVC standings.

With the setback, Bradley closed the regular season tied with Indiana State for sixth in the standings and will be the #6 seed for this week's MVC Tournament which will be held in Evansville, Ind., May 12-15.

Drake got on the board in the top of the first with Skylar Rigby opening the scoring with a RBI single to right center.  The Bulldogs added two more in the second on a two-out, two-run single up the middle off the bat of Emily Valtman.  Bradley trailed 4-0 after Drake scored a run on a squeeze play in the top of the third.

The Braves finally got on the board in the bottom half of the third.  Camryn Monteer drew a walk and Vicki Zaluske legged out an infield single for one of her two hits on the day to put two on.  Taise Thompson ripped a single down the left field line that drove in Monteer, but Zaluske was thrown at the plate as Bradley cut the Drake advantage to 4-1.

Bradley threatened again in the fourth, loading the bases on a single by Keeler van Breusegen, a one-out walk to Navarro and two-out walk to Monteer.  Drake starter Nicole Timmons got a strikeout to end the threat, however.

Drake broke the contest open with a four-run fifth.  A passed ball with the bases loaded allowed the first run of the inning to come home and Libby Ryan plated two more with a with a single up the middle.  Rigby made it an 8-1 Drake lead with a two-out infield single that drove home Ryan.

The Bulldogs added three more in the sixth after loading the bases on a walk, single and hit batter to open the frame.  Alexia Lara delivered a pinch hit, three-run double to left center that gave Drake a commanding 11-1 lead.

Navarro tried to keep the Bradley rally hopes alive with a solo homer in the sixth, but Timmons notched her second strikeout of the day to close out the complete game victory.  Navarro's homer was her team-best fifth of the year and her 19th career dinger.

Bradley returns to action Thursday at 1 p.m. in the second round of the MVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind., with the Braves facing the winner of Wednesday's opening-round game between #7 seed Indiana State and #10 seed Valparaiso.
