Fresh off a historic rookie season with the Bradley track and field team, Wilma Nielsen (Gothenburg, Sweden) continues to make headlines by earning the bronze medal at the 2021 European U23 Championship, held in Estonia over the weekend.

Nielsen earned her podium finish with a Missouri Valley Conference record of 2:02.29 in the 800m run. She broke her own Bradley record by nearly three seconds (2:05.16 on May 29), while surpassing the previous conference standard of 2:02.67 – set by Indiana State's Alethia Marrero in 2015.

Her bronze-medal finish caps an outstanding 2021 season for the rookie on the track. Nielsen became the first Bradley freshman to qualify for the NCAA Championship rounds in Eugene, Oregon when she advanced to the national semifinals in the 800m and received honorable-mention All-America accolades. She is also a four-time all-conference honoree and was named the MVC Indoor Track Freshman of the Year.

In addition to her outdoor 800m school record, Nielsen also owns the BU standards in the indoor 800m and outdoor 1,500m and is a part of the team's 4x400 outdoor record.
