CARBONDALE, IL – Guards Caroline Waite and Tatum Koenig shared team-high honors with 17 points each, but a large disparity in offensive rebounds, turnovers and free throw attempts proved too much for Bradley (3-13, 0-7 MVC) to overcome Saturday afternoon at Southern Illinois.  The Salukis (10-6, 5-1 MVC) moved into sole possession of second place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings with a 53-41 win at Banterra Center.

Bradley limited the host Salukis to just 29.3 percent (17-58) shooting from the field, but SIU snared 19 offensive rebounds and outscored the Braves, 15-3, in second-chance points.  The Salukis also took advantage of a +10 turnover margin and converted Bradley's 19 miscues into am 18-0 margin in points off turnovers.  Despite the two favorable stats, SIU (18-27) outscored Bradley (2-4) by 16 at the free throw line.

While Koenig and Waite were Bradley's lone double-digit scorers, Southern Illinois put a trio of players in double figures, led by the duo of Makenzie Silvey and Abby Brockmeyer, who shared game-high honors with 17 points apiece.  Brockmeyer pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Gabby Walker just missed on a double-double of her own, finishing with 14 points and nine boards.

In her first start of the season, junior forward Veronika Roberts paced the Braves with nine rebounds.

Saturday's game was close throughout the bulk of play with seven ties and eight lead changes.  Koenig delivered Bradley's final lead, 30-29, on a transition basket with 8:18 left in the third quarter.  Silvey had the answer on the ensuing possession, however, draining SIU's only 3-pointer of the game for a 32-30 lead with 7:59 to go in the third.

Silvey's final points came on a bucket in the paint for a 43-39 lead with 8:06 remaining and made her the all-time leading scorer in SIU history with 1,770 points.  Koenig's driving layup with 6:18 left pulled the Braves to within 44-41, but Bradley did not score the rest of the game.  In fact, the game's only field goal after Koenig's basket was Walker's layup to set the final score with 1:23 remaining.  The teams combined to go 1-for-12 from the field in the final 6:18.

The Salukis pulled away by draining 7-of-8 free throw attempts to start their 9-0, game-ending run.

Having played ten of its last 13 games on the road, Bradley will return to action by tipping off a season-long, 4-game home stand Thursday against Drake in a rematch of the 2021 Hoops in the Heartland MVC Tournament championship game.  Following Thursday's 6:30 p.m. game at Renaissance Coliseum, Bradley will host UNI Saturday (2 p.m.) afternoon.
