Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Bobby Parker, Sr. Associate AD for Communications and Event & Facility Operations
VALPARAISO, IN – Senior guards Tatum Koenig (27 points) and Chloe Rice (14) both scored career-highs, but visiting Bradley (4-17, 1-11 MVC) came up on the wrong end of consecutive foul calls in the final minute and Valparaiso (8-15, 6-6 MVC) took advantage of the 5-point swing for an 86-84 Missouri Valley Conference victory Thursday night at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Koenig surpassed her previous career-best of 23 points, which she had reached for the third time in Saturday's 77-67 win against Evansville, but her shot at a 30-point night was wiped out with 53 seconds remaining in the game when she was called for a charge, rather than earning a trip to the free throw line to complete an "and-1" play that could have given the Braves an 81-80 lead.

On the ensuing Valparaiso possession, the Braves appeared to get a defensive stop, but as Caroline Waite was collecting a defensive rebound with 29 seconds left, fellow freshman Abbie Draper was whistled for a foul on the box out, sending Grace White to the free throw line.  White made both free throws to extend Valparaiso's lead to 82-78 and the Beacons added four more free throws in the final 17 seconds to hold on for their first regular-season sweep against the Braves.

For the second consecutive game, Bradley's starting five dominated the stat sheet as the quintet combined for 80 of the team's 84 points.  Waite added 20 points and Draper chipped in 10, while Sierra Morrow finished with nine points and eight rebounds.  Forward Tete Danso was the only reserve to score for the Braves, finishing with four points and a game-high nine rebounds in her 19 minutes.

White led the Beacons with 20 points and Carrie Weinman also came off the Valpo bench to add 19 points, while Shay Frederick posted a double-double with 17 points, 11 assists and a team-best six rebounds.

Rice matched her previous scoring best with 11 points in the first quarter, helping the Braves move out to a 26-17 lead after the opening period.  The Beacons outscored the Braves in each of the final three quarters, however, 27-20 in the second and matching 21-19 margins in both the third and fourth periods, to outlast the visitors in a game that saw six ties and five lead changes.

Bradley will complete its Chicagoland road swing with a 1 p.m. tip Saturday afternoon at Loyola Chicago, the final MVC regular-season matchup between the Braves and Ramblers.
