Game Recap: Softball |
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Senior Camryn Monteer went 3-for-4 with a double, but Grand Canyon scored single runs in each of the first five innings to top Bradley Softball 5-0 Sunday afternoon in the final game of the GCU Kickoff Classic.

Tournament-host Grand Canyon (4-1 overall)  jumped out to an early lead, pushing a run across in the bottom of the first.  Gianna Nicoletti led things off for the Lopes with a single and stole second, before coming around to score on a double off the bat of Stephanie Reed.

The second inning saw Grand Canyon use a two-out rally to add another run.  Hannah Burnett legged out an infield single and scored all the way from first on a Macee Barnes single to left center to give the Lopes a 2-0 advantage.

Bradley (1-4 overall) tried to mount its own two-out rally in the top of the third, but couldn't take advantage of two-out singles by Monteer and Lucy Mead

Grand Canyon answered with another run in the bottom half of the third.  Reed led off the frame with a double and Denae Chatman drove her home from third with a two-out single to push the Lopes' lead to 3-0.

A leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth helped lead to another Grand Canyon run.  Annie Villalobos singled to start the inning and the Lopes had a runner at third with one out after a fielder's choice, wild pitch and stolen base.  Bradley threw out Macee Barnes trying to steal second, but Hannah Burnett was able to race home on the throw to give Grand Canyon a 4-0 lead.

Bradley threatened again in the top of the fifth.  Freshman Katie Pederson delivered with a pinch hit single and moved to second on a two-out wild pitch.  Monteer's second hit of the day put runners at the corners, but Jacie Hambrick's seventh strikeout of the afternoon ended the inning.

Another Grand Canyon run in the bottom of the fifth pushed the lead to 5-0.  Katelyn Dunckel had a leadoff single and later scored on a RBI single by Chatman.

The Braves couldn't take advantage of a Jordy van der Werf single in the sixth and left a pair in scoring position in the seventh after a Grand Canyon error and Monteer double as the Lopes closed out the 5-0 victory.

Bradley returns to action next weekend, opening play at the Roar City Invitational in Nashville, Tenn., Friday with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Miami (Ohio).
