Game Recap: Softball |
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After tossing a no-hitter last week against St. Thomas, senior Grace French gave up just three hits in a complete game effort against North Alabama Friday afternoon at the Bruins Classic; but Bradley came up on the wrong end of a pitcher's duel as the Lions edged the Braves 1-0.

Neither team had many scoring chances with both teams taking shutout bids into the seventh.  The teams combined for eight hits with North Alabama (19-5 overall) starter Maci Birdyshaw answering with a five-hit complete game shutout.

Senior Camryn Monteer led off the game with a single in the top of the first.  Monteer swiped second and advanced to third on a North Alabama error on the play.  It appeared she gave Bradley (10-10 overall) an early 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by French, but was called out for leaving early to end the inning.

The Braves had another scoring chance in the top of the second after two-out singles by Katie Pederson and Keeler van Breusegen.  Birdyshaw got a strikeout to end the threat, however.

French worked around two-out singles in both the second and third innings and the Braves couldn't take advantage of an Addie Welsh leadoff single in the top of the third.

Bradley came up empty again in the fifth after van Breusegen led off the frame with a single.  A pair of groundouts and a flyout ended the threat as the Braves left a total of two runners in scoring position in the contest.

French retired seven straight, including retiring the side in both the fourth and fifth, before surrendering a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth.  The Lions left a runner at third, with French getting three straight groundouts to get out of the inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, North Alabama's Emma Broadfoot reached on an error to open the inning and pinch runner Mary Kilpatrick moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Kilpatrick advanced to third on a single by Harley Stokes and she scored the game-winning run when Maleah Hargett reached on a fielder's choice.

Bradley continues play at the Bruin Classic later this afternoon with a 5:30 p.m. game against Akron
