Game Recap: Softball |
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Freshman Addie Welsh hit her first career homer, scoring twice and driving in a pair and fellow frosh Abbott Badgley held Akron to two unearned runs as the duo helped Bradley Softball to a 7-2 victory over the Zips Friday at the Bruin Classic.

Bradley (11-10 overall) opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first.  Keeler van Breusegen singled for her third hit of the day and stole second.  The Braves had two on after freshman Katie Pederson drew a walk and senior Samantha Smith drove in van Breusegen with a single to center to give Bradley an early 1-0 lead.

Akron (2-13 overall) was able to answer with a run in the top of the third to even things up at 1-1.  A leadoff walk, error and sacrifice bunt put a runner on third with only out for the Zips.  Molly McChesney drove in Tiffany Stevens from third with a two-out infield single to pull Akron even at 1-1.

The Braves broke things open with a three-run bottom of the third.  Welsh led off the frame with a single and Camryn Monteer reached on a fielder's choice.  Both base runners came home on a two-run triple off the bat of Grace French, who later scored on a single by Badgley to put Bradley back in front 4-1.

In the fifth, Bradley was able to take advantage of a two-out walk to add an insurance run.  Badgley drew the two-out free pass and pinch runner Allie Paregien was able to race home from first on a double from van Breusegen as the BU lead stood at 5-1 heading to the sixth.

Akron was able to scratch out a run in the top of the sixth.  Kalli Macintosh-Houlder had a leadoff single and moved to second on a passed ball.  Laurel DeVoe drove her home with a one-out single to cut the Bradley lead to 5-2.  The Braves were able to get out of the inning without anymore damage, turning a fly ball to left into an inning-ending double play.

Bradley answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Sophomore Jordy van der Werf reached on a one-out error and Welsh made it a 7-2 advantage for the Braves with a two-run homer to right.

Badgley worked around a one-out single to close out the victory as she earned her team-best fourth victory of the season (4-2).  She struck out one and walked two in her third complete game of the year.

Bradley will have Saturday off before closing out the Bruin Classic Sunday with a 10 a.m. rematch with Akron along with a 3:30 p.m. contest against tournament-host Belmont.
