Addie Welsh Named MVC Newcomer Of The Week

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Freshman shortstop Addie Welsh (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week according to an announcement by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Welsh hit a team-best .600 (6-for-10) at the Bruin Classic in Nashville, Tenn., last weekend, hitting the first two home runs of her career. She scored three runs and drove in three runs in the four games, owning a .667 OBP and 1.200 slugging percentage in addition to posting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage at shortstop.

The freshman hit the first home run of her career in a victory against Akron, going 2-for-3 with a stolen base, two runs and two RBI. Welsh gave Bradley a 2-1 lead with a third-inning run and capped the scoring in the 7-2 victory with a two-run homer in the sixth. Sunday against Akron, Welsh went 2-for-3 with two walks and a solo home run. In fact, she reached base in all five plate appearances in the rematch with the Zips, hitting a solo homer in the second, drawing walks in the fourth and fifth frames before a sixth-inning single in addition to reaching on an error in the seventh. Welsh recorded Bradley's last hit in Sunday's setback to Belmont, capping a 1-for-2 game with a single to leadoff the fifth inning.

The MVC Newcomer of the Week award is the first for Welsh, who has started all 23 games for the Braves this season and owns a .273 batting average on the year.

Bradley has two MVC Newcomer of the Week awards in the same season for the first time since 2018 when Stacia Seeton won the award three times. Fellow freshman Abbott Badgley was named the MVC Newcomer of the Week back on March 1.

Welsh and the Braves return to action this weekend, opening Missouri Valley Conference play with a three-game home series against Loyola. The series starts Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex and concludes Sunday with a single game at noon.
