Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Bradley Softball got a walk-off victory on a seventh-inning squeeze play to take the opener of a doubleheader with Loyola 2-1, but the Ramblers took the rubber match of the three-game series with a 4-0 shutout of the Braves Sunday afternoon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

Freshman Abbott Badgley picked up her team-best sixth victory of the year (6-2) to start the day, scattering six hits in a complete game effort in the first game of the twinbill.

Loyola (8-12 overall, 2-1 MVC) scored the first run of the contest in the third after Nova Sinskul drew a two-out walk.  Amelia Thomas followed with a walk of her own and Haley Wallace drove in Sinskul from second with a single to center as the Ramblers grabbed a 1-0 lead.

Bradley (13-13 overall, 1-2 MVC) threatened in the fourth, but stranded a pair as Loyola hurler Andie Broniewicz took a shutout into the sixth.

Freshman Addie Welsh helped spark a Bradley rally with a triple to leadoff the BU half of the sixth and came home to tie the game at 1-1 on a single up the middle off the bat of senior Grace French, who was 2-for-3 in the opener.  The Braves had French at third with only one out, but Broniewicz and Loyola got out of the jam with a strikeout and fly out as the teams went to the seventh tied at 1-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, freshman Allie Paregien had a one-out, pinch-hit single and moved to second on a Loyola error.  Senior Camryn Monteer reached on the second Rambler error in the inning to put runners at second and third with only one out.  After scoring the tying run in the sixth, Welsh drove in the game-winning run when she put down a perfect bunt on a squeeze play to plate Paregien from third as Bradley evened the series with the 2-1 walk-off victory.

Loyola took the rubber match of the series, however, with Peyton Peopkowski following up a two-hit shutout from Saturday with another two-hit shutout Sunday.  The Ramblers got the only run they would need in the first with back-to-back hit batters followed by consecutive walks to give Loyola an early 1-0 lead.

The Ramblers added two more runs in the third on a RBI single by Wallace, who later scored in the inning on a RBI single from Hannah Nalley to push the lead to 3-0.

Loyola added an insurance run in the fourth, scoring on a double steal with two out and runners at the corners to push the advantage to 4-0.

Sophomore Camryn Schaller came on for Bradley in the fifth to retire the final eight Loyola hitters of the contest as she tossed two and two-third scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Braves.

Pepkowski kept Bradley off the scoreboard, however, limiting the Braves to one hit and a total of two base runners through the first six frames.  Bradley tried to mount another seventh-inning rally with Samantha Smith collecting a one-out single and Badgley drawing a four-point walk to put two runners on.  After a fly out for the second out of the inning, senior Keeler van Breusegen ripped a shot to left center, but Loyola center fielder Teagan Sopczak made a diving grab at the warning track to close out the 4-0 Rambler win.

Bradley opens a nine-game MVC road swing next weekend with a three-game series at Indiana State.  The Braves open the three-game set with the Sycamores Saturday in Terre Haute, Ind., with an 11 a.m. (CDT) doubleheader.
