Game Recap: Softball |
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Bradley opened up a three-game series at Indiana State with a convincing 9-1 victory in the opener, but the Sycamores salvaged a split in the doubleheader by rallying for six runs in the seventh to take the nightcap 7-6 Sunday afternoon at Price Field.

In the opener, Grace French held Indiana State (15-12 overall, 3-2 MVC) to five hits in a complete game victory as she improved to 3-6 on the season.  She struck out five and walked one in her career-best seventh complete game effort of the year.

The Braves (14-14 overall, 2-3 MVC) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the fourth.  Senior Samantha Smith led off the inning with a double and came home on a double by Abbott Badgley, who later scored when Keeler van Breusegen reached on an error.

French kept Indiana State off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth.  Abi Chipps kept the inning alive when she reached on a two-out error and came around to score from first on a double off the bat of Bella Peterson as the Sycamores cut the Bradley lead in half at 2-1.

Bradley broke the contest open with a five-run sixth.  The Braves had runners at second and third after a leadoff single from Smith and another double by Badgley.  Freshman Katie Pederson ripped a two-run double to left center and Bradley would load the bases on a van Breusegen walk and a one-out single by Lucy MeadCamryn Monteer drove in a run with a bases loaded walk and Addie Welsh plated another run when she reached on an error.  The Bradley lead ballooned to 7-2 when French was hit by a pitch to drive in Mead from third.

French retired Indiana State in order in the sixth and the Braves tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by Abigail Tyler to push the advantage to 9-2.

Another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the seventh for French and the Braves closed out the 9-2 win.

After picking up the victory in the opener, French got the scoring started in the nightcap with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning as Bradley took an early 2-0 lead.

Indiana State cut the BU advantage in half with Peterson belting a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the third.

The Braves added four insurance runs in the top of the fifth.  Bradley loaded the bases on walks by Tyler and Monteer sandwiched around a Mead single.  Welsh drove in Tyler and Mead with a single to third and an Indiana State error on the play allowed Monteer to come home.  Smith later drove in Welsh from third with a groundout as Bradley built a 6-1 advantage.

Bradley appeared to be in line to sweep the doubleheader, taking the 6-1 lead to the bottom of the seventh when Indiana State would rally.  Danielle Henning and Randi Jo Pryor both singled to open the frame and knock Bradley starter Raegan Branon out of the contest.  An Olivia Patton single loaded the bases for Chipps, who drove in the first run of the inning with a single to right.  Peterson pulled the Sycamores within three at 6-3 with a sacrifice fly to center and Cassie Thomerson loaded the bases again with a walk.  Isabella Henning tied the score at 6-6 with a three-run double and came around to score the game-winning run on a walk-off single up the middle by Lexie Siwek as Indiana State salvaged the split with a 7-6 win.

Bradley and Indiana State close out the series Monday with a single game that will start at 11 a.m. (CDT).
