Rally Falls Short At Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Trailing 5-2 heading to the seventh, Bradley Softball scored a pair of runs to make it a one-run game and loaded the bases with only one out, but Indiana State escaped with a 5-4 victory Monday to take the series from the Braves. 
 
Bradley (14-15 overall, 2-4 MVC) made it a one-run game with two runs in the seventh inning, before Indiana State's Cassi Newbanks got a pair of outs with the bases loaded to close out the 5-4 victory for the Sycamores (16-12 overall, 4-2 MVC).
 
Senior Lucy Mead helped spark the seventh inning rally with a leadoff triple and eventually came home on a sacrifice fly by freshman Addie Welsh to cut the Indiana State advantage to 5-3.  With Camryn Monteer on base, senior Grace French drew a walk and Samantha Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Freshman Abbott Badgley drove in Monteer from third when she was hit by a pitch to make it a one-run deficit at 5-4.  Newbanks got a lineout for the second out of the inning, however, and a fielder's choice sealed the win as the Sycamores took the series two games to one. 
 
Indiana State struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of third to take a 2-0 lead.  The Sycamores had the bases loaded after a one-out intentional walk to Bella Peterson for Cassie Thomerson, who drove in the first run of the contest with a single to left.  Isabella Henning followed with a fielder's choice that drove in another run as Indiana State built a 2-0 advantage. 
 
Bradley answered with a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Indiana State lead in half at 2-1.  French led off the frame with a double and later scored from third on a RBI groundout by Badgley. 
 
Indiana State threatened to add insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth, loading the bases with only one out.  French got Abi Chipps to hit into a fielder's choice with the Braves getting the second out of the inning at the plate and a groundout by Peterson ended the frame. 
 
In the top of the fifth, Monteer kept the inning alive with a two-out single.  Welsh followed with a single of her own and Monteer was able to race all the way around from first thanks to an Indiana State error on the play to knot the score at 2-2. 
 
Just like the fourth inning, Indiana State loaded the bases with only one out.  The Braves again got the second out of the inning at the plate on a fielder's choice, but Randi Jo Pryor followed with a bases loaded walk that allowed Henning to come home with the go-ahead run as the Sycamores led 3-2 heading to the sixth. 
 
Indiana State loaded the bases once again in the bottom of the sixth and managed to push two runs across.  The Sycamores loaded the bases on a single and back-to-back walks to open the frame.  Bradley threw out the lead runner at the plate on a fielder's choice for the first out and French struck out Lexie Siwek for the second out of the inning.  A two-out double by Kaylee Barrett drove in two runs, however, as Indiana State pushed the lead to 5-2. 
 
Bradley continues a nine-game MVC road swing this weekend with a three-game series at Valparaiso that will start with a noon doubleheader Saturday.
