Game Recap: Softball |
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Bradley's top hitter entering the weekend, Samantha Smith picked a good time to collect her first hit of the Mizzou Classic with the senior belting a leadoff solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to give the Braves a 4-3 walk-off victory over St. Thomas Saturday afternoon.

Smith brought a six-game hit streak into the weekend, but was hitless after the first two games of the Mizzou Classic.  She came up big in the bottom of the eighth, collecting her team-best third home run of the season to give Bradley the 4-3 extra-inning victory.

Camryn Schaller retired St. Thomas (2-11 overall) in order in the top of the first and Bradley (9-8 overall) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame.  Camryn Monteer had a leadoff double and senior Grace French followed with a two-run homer to left to give the Braves an early 2-0 advantage.

Schaller took a no-hit bid into the fourth before a solo homer by Sarah Hudson with one out in the fourth cut the Bradley lead to 2-1.

After coming in to get Bradley out a first and second jam in the top of the fourth with St. Thomas leaving two on, freshman Abbott Badgley pushed BU's lead to 3-1 with a two-out solo homer in the bottom half of the inning.

St. Thomas managed to push a pair across in the top of the sixth to knot things up at 3-3, however.  Brooke Ellestad had a leadoff triple and came home on a Hudson single.  With two out and a runner at second, Christina Crawford delivered with a RBI single to right center to pull the Tommies even at 3-3.

Bradley threatened in the bottom half of the sixth, loading the bases on singles by Abigail Tyler and Katie Pederson along with a walk by van Breusegen.  St. Thomas got the second out of the inning at the plate on a fielder's choice and a pop out helped the Tommies escape the jam unscathed.

In the eighth, St. Thomas stranded the go-ahead run at second after a two-out walk by Megan Baniecke.

Smith ended the contest in the bottom half of the eighth with a solo homer to lead things off as the Braves walked away with the 4-3 victory.

Badgley picked up the win out of the bullpen, scattering four hits and two runs over 4.1 innings of work as she improved to 3-1 on the season.

Bradley will play a pair of games Sunday to conclude the Mizzou Classic, facing St. Thomas at 10 a.m. and #15 Missouri at 12:30 p.m.
