Game Recap: Softball |
DES MOINES, Iowa – Senior Keeler van Breusegen went 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI, while sophomore Jordy van der Werf belted a game-tying two-run homer in the fifth, but Drake scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Bulldogs topped Bradley 9-6 Sunday in the series finale.

Bradley (17-18 overall, 5-7 MVC) threatened in the first inning with senior Lucy Mead drawing a walk and stealing second for her third steal of the series.  A two-out infield single by senior Samantha Smith put runners at the corners, but a pop-out ended the inning.

Drake (12-20 overall, 6-5 MVC) responded with four runs in the bottom of the first.  Emily Valtman led off the Bulldogs' half of the first with a single and came around to score on a triple off the bat of Macy Johnson, who scored on a Delaney Taylor single to give Drake a 2-0 advantage.  Carey Koenig drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two-out, two-run single to right as the Bulldogs went in front 4-0.

Bradley cut the Drake lead in half with a pair of runs in the top of the second.  With two on and one out, one run came home thanks to an error on a bunt single by freshman Katie Pederson.  Senior Camryn Monteer drove in the second run of the frame with a RBI single back up the middle to pull the Braves within two at 4-2.

Drake was able to get both runs back in the bottom half of the second, however.  A single and walk to start the inning put two on for the Bulldogs, with Valtman eventually coming home on a one-out single by Addie Lightner.  MaKayla Rice drew a two-out walk to load the bases and a base on balls to Koenig drove in a run to push the Drake lead to 6-2.

Senior Samantha Smith collected her second hit of the game in the top of the third, driving in a run with a RBI double off the wall in center.  French led off the inning with a walk and came around from first on the Smith's double that cut the Drake advantage to 6-3.  Bradley pulled within 6-4 later in the inning with Smith coming home on a RBI single up the middle by van Breusegen.

In the top of the fifth, sophomore van der Werf collected her first hit since returning to the Bradley lineup after missing nearly a month of the season with an injury; smacking a two-out, two-run homer to left to tie things up at 6-6.

A two-out Drake rally in the bottom of the fifth proved costly.  With two on and two out, Johnson drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left.  Taylor gave Drake a 9-6 lead with a two-run single down the line in right.

Bradley tried to mount a late rally in the seventh, with freshman Abbott Badgley drawing a one-out walk to get things started in the frame.  Van Breusegen ripped a double to left center, but Drake was able to throw out pinch runner Olivia Bradley at the plate for the second out of the inning and a groundout ended the contest as Drake took the series finale 9-6.

The Braves return to Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex next weekend, opening a season-long, eight-game home stand Friday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Southern Illinois.
