Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – A day removed from needing late-game heroics for a pair of one-run victories to open the series, Bradley Softball got a game-tying, three-run homer in the fifth and took advantage of a seventh-inning error for a walk-off 5-4 victory over Southern Illinois Saturday afternoon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Complex to complete the series sweep.

Bradley (20-18 overall, 8-7 MVC) scored 11 of its 13 runs in the series in the fifth inning or later, sweeping Southern Illinois (20-16 overall, 9-8 MVC) in a three-game series for the first time in program history.  The last regular-season series sweep for the Braves against the Salukis came in 2000 in a two-game series played in Peoria.

Senior Samantha Smith tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.  The Braves had two on for Smith, who hit her fourth home run of the year, after singles by seniors Lucy Mead and Grace French.

Sophomore pitcher Camryn Schaller was solid once again out of the bullpen, entering the game trailing 3-0 with no outs and a runner at second in the top of the first to scatter four hits and give up just one run in seven innings or work.  Schaller worked around a leadoff walk in the sixth and retired Southern Illinois in the top of the seventh to keep the score knotted at 4-4 heading to the bottom half of the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Mead drew a four-pitch walk to start the inning but was later called out for interference when she ran into SIU second baseman Jenny Jansen on a ground ball hit by French.  After homering in the fifth, Smith drew a four-pitch walk of her own to put two runners on.  Freshman Abbott Badgley, who hit a solo homer in the second inning, hit a fly ball to left that would have been the second out of the inning.  SIU left fielder Elizabeth Warwick wasn't able to make the grab, however, and the ball rolled all the way to right field, allowing French to score the game-winning run as Bradley picked up its second walk-off win in its last three contests with the 5-4 victory.

SIU jumped out to an early lead, pushing three runs across in the top of the first.  Aubree DePron led off the contest with a triple and the Salukis had a single and walk to load the bases for Jansen, who ripped a three-run double down the left field line.  Schaller took over in the circle for the Braves after the Jansen double and kept SIU in check as she went to pick up the win to improve to 4-3 on the year.

Badgley's team-leading fifth homer of the year to leadoff the bottom of the second cut the Southern Illinois advantage to 3-1.

SIU added a run in the fourth, loading the bases on a pair of walks and an Ashley Wood single.  The Southern Illinois lead was 4-1 after the Salukis added a run on a bases loaded fielder's choice.

Bradley continues an eight-game home stand Tuesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against I-74 rival Illinois State at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
