Game Recap: Softball |
PEORIA, Ill. – Senior Grace French took a perfect game into the fourth and gave up just three hits to help Bradley take the series opener against Evansville 10-1, but the Aces rebounded for a 7-3 victory in the nightcap as the teams split a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.

French earned her team-best eighth victory of the year, giving up one run and three hits in the opener, while fellow senior Keeler van Breusegen went 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI to help highlight the 10-1 Bradley victory to start the day.

Senior Lucy Mead went 4-for-7 on the day, collecting two hits in each game as she pushed her career-best win streak to 12 games.

In the opener, French retired the first 10 batters she faced and Bradley (22-20 overall, 10-8 MVC) gave her an early lead with six runs in the bottom of the first.  French started the scoring with a RBI single through the right side to plate senior Camryn Monteer, who opened the contest with a walk.  With two on and two outs, van Breusegen ripped a two-run triple down the right field line.  Sophomore Jordy van der Werf followed an Addie Welsh walk with a two-run single and van der Werf came around to score on a RBI double off the bat of freshman Katie Pederson as the Braves scored five two-out runs to take a 6-0 lead.

With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the second, van Breusegen made it a 7-0 Bradley advantage with a sacrifice fly that scored Mead from third.

The Braves added three more runs in the third.  Bradley had two on after a Pederson single and Mead double for French, who drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases.  Senior Samantha Smith was hit by a pitch to drive in the first run of the inning and BU's lead was 10-0 after freshman Abbott Badgley smacked a two-out, two-run single to center.

Evansville (22-20 overall, 7-12 MVC) got its first hit of the contest when MacKenzie McFeron ripped a one-out triple to right in the top of the fourth and scored on a single by Marah Wood.

French settled down to get out of the inning without any further damage, however, and sat the Aces down in order in the fifth to close out the 10-1 win.  She struck out one and walked none as she evened her record at 8-8 with the complete game victory.

In the second game, Evansville opened the game with a single, walk and Wood triple to take an early 2-0 lead.  The Aces added a third run in the inning when Wood scored on a squeeze play as Bradley found itself in an early 3-0 hole.

Bradley got a run back in the bottom of the second.  The Braves had runners at the corners after singles by Badgley and van Breusegen to open the frame for Welsh, who drove in Badgley with a comebacker to the pitcher.

Another Bradley run in the bottom of the third cut the UE advantage to 3-2.  Monteer opened the inning with an infield single and moved all the way to third on an Evansville error on the play.  Mead drove her home with a single through the right side of the infield to make it a one-run contest.

Evansville answered with four two-out runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-2.  A two-out single, hit by pitch and walk loaded the bases for Alexa Davis, who drove in all three runners with a triple to right center.  Davis later scored on an attempted double steal to give Evansville a five-run cushion.

Bradley threatened in the fifth, but left two in scoring position and got a run in the sixth.  In the sixth, Smith was hit by a pitch for the second time on the day to open the frame and Badgley followed with a single.  With runners at the corners and one out, Welsh drove in Olivia Bradley from third with a sacrifice fly to right to trim the Aces' lead to 7-3.

Evansville pitcher Sydney Weatherford got out of the inning with a fielder's choice and worked around a two-out Mead single for a scoreless seventh to wrap up the 7-3 Evansville win.

French came out of the bullpen in game two, scattering two hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings of work.  She surrendered five hits and two earned runs in 8.1 innings of work in the two contests, in addition to extending her streak of consecutive games reaching base to a career-best 16 contests.

Bradley closes out an eight-game home stand and completes the weekend series against Evansville Sunday with a single game at noon at Petersen Hotels Field at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex.
